Ghosts, the UK sitcom about the Ghosts of Button House successfully made the transition from being an amazingly funny UK series to a hilarious US TV sitcom. Now it is also being made for the German audience and an Australian version of the show is in production.
The German Version
The German version of Ghosts is being produced by BBC Studios Germany and filming started back in the summer.
The young couple here are Emma and Felix who inherit an old mansion and decide to turn it into a hotel. After a near-death accident Emma discovers she can see and hear the ghosts.
The German writing team have done an amazing job of localising their ghosts.
The Ghosts:
- Svenni, the teacher
- Griet, a feminist maid
- Friedrich Dorn, a love-hungry poet
- Urs, a Neanderthal
- Joachim, an insurance salesman
- Adelheid, the Countess
- Claudius, a Roman legionnaire
They have been filming the series over the summer and the first series will consist of six, thirty minute episodes.
Hopefully hitting German television screens in 2025
The Australian Version
The Australian version of Ghosts will start filming soon. It is being produced by Paramount Australia and BBC Studios Productions Australia for Paramount+ and Network 10.
Here we will see couple Kate and Sean who were searching for a home when Kate inherits a country mansion, Ramshead Manor, which is full of the ghosts from the past 200 years. Kate wants to revamp the manor into a Boutique Hotel, whilst Sean isn’t so sure.
Kate suffers a near death experience which gives her the power to see the ghosts.
Currently there is no further information on the Ghosts themselves, but we seriously CANNOT WAIT for this version of the show. (so hyped for this).
The series will have 8 episodes and hopes to launch in 2025.
Of course if you cannot wait. . .
The US Version
The US version of the show started in 2021 and whilst its roots are firmly in the original UK show, the changes made for the US audience made it different enough to be equally as entertaining.
The They Them team who created the original UK series are executive producers on the US show.
Samantha and Jay Arondekar inherited the Woodstone Estate from Sam’s great aunt and decided to turn it into a hotel.
Sam fell down the stairs and had a near death experience which led her to discovering she can see and hear the ghosts of the Woodstone Estate.
Many of the ghosts seem familiar to fans of the UK show, the writing team did a brilliant job of changing and adding new ghosts to the US version.
The Ghosts are:
- Pete, a Pinecone troop leader
- Alberta, a prohibition era lounge singer
- Thor, a Viking from Norway
- Trevor, a disgraced stockbroker.
- Hetty Woodstone, the uptight lady of the manor
- Sass, a cynical Lenape Man
- Captain Isaac Higgintoot, a Continental Army Officer
- Flower, a naive hippie
- Crash, a 1950’s era greaser who lost his head.
- The cholera ghosts
- The British Revolution Ghosts.
The show has so far produced 4 seasons. Season one contained 18 episodes, Season two 22 episodes, Season three had 10 and Season four is currently showing on CBS and Paramount.
UK Ghosts - The Original Series.
Ghosts was created, written and starred the team from Horrible Histories, Yonderland and Bill known as Them There.
The premise:
Alison Cooper and her husband Mike inherit Button House from an unknown relative. They decide to turn Button House into a B&B hotel. Button House, however, came already inhabited by a smorgasbord of ghosts.
Alison was pushed out of the upstairs window resulting in her being clinically dead for 3 minutes, and when she awakens from a two week coma, she finds she can see and hear the ghosts of this world.
How the ghosts interacted with her on a daily basis and the chaos it caused was the basis of the series.
The ghosts are:
- Pat, a Scout leader,
- Kitty, a Georgian noblewoman,
- Thomas, a Regency romantic poet,
- Julian, a disgraced MP,
- Fanny Button, the Edwardian lady of the manor,
- Robin, a caveman,
- Sir Humprey Bone, a Tudor nobleman who literally lost his head,
- The Captain, a WWII Army Officer
- Mary Guppy, a Stuart witch trial victim.
- The plague victims
- Jemima, a young plague victim.
The UK show ran from 2019-2023 for 5 series of 6 episodes each, a 7 minute Comic Relief special and had 4 Christmas specials, the last being the very final episode.
