Welcome to issue 241. Discworld Monthly is 20 years old! Happy Birthday to us!
It's all change here at Discworld Monthly with job roles shifting about due to work commitments.
We now have a couple of roving reporters who have taken on reviewing plays near to them for us. (We can call them our reporters especially as one of them has reviewed more than one play! - RR)
It would have been Terry's 69th birthday on 28th April and there's lots of events going on around it to celebrate our favourite author. See the News section for more details on those.

There will be a special webcast by the Puffin Virtually Live team celebrating Terry Pratchett Day on Friday 28th April at 2pm - 2.30pm

Birdworld in Farnham, Surrey will be holding a Discworld Day on Friday the 28th April 2017.
Birdworld is officially celebrating the opening of the Terry Pratchett Owl Parliament with the assistance of Discworld dignitaries, Rob Wilkins and Stephen Briggs.
"The beautifully crafted exhibit has been created in collaboration with the World Owl Trust and has been named in honour of the award-winning author, Sir Terry Pratchett due to his well-known love of wildlife and in particular, all species of owl.
As well as showcasing a wonderment and diversity of owls, the Terry Pratchett Owl Parliament will aim to educate and raise awareness of these amazing birds in an interactive space for visitors to learn fascinating facts.
Visitors familiar with the popular Discworld novels will be able to easily recognise a number of the references but with the unique styling of these aviaries, everyone exploring the exhibit will be drawn into the mythical and wonderful world of Sir Terry Pratchett.
To celebrate the day, which would have been Sir Terry's 69th Birthday, visitors are invited to attend the official opening ceremony. Explore the unique aviaries before joining in with plenty of Discworld fun and games throughout the day including, a themed quiz trail, face painting, a charity raffle and auction packed full of prizes, educational talks and even a special Q&A session with Rob Wilkins and Stephen Briggs"
The programme of events for the day is as follows.
10.00am - Park opens.
Use this time to take part in The Discworld Trail around the park to win prizes. Use the map to explore the park and answer the questions to solve the anagram. Hand your answer into the information desk before you leave to be entered into the prize draw.
12.00pm - Official opening ceremony at the Terry Pratchett Owl Parliament with Rob Wilkins and Stephen Briggs.
Which is immediately followed by:
The Discworld Day Auction - Enjoy the Discworld Auction with special auctioneer, Pat Harkin. Have your lot sheet at the ready to bid for some star prizes! All money raised from today's auction goes directly to the Birdworld conservation fund.
12:45pm - Break.
1.30pm - A Q&A with Rob Wilkins and Stephen Briggs in the Discovery Theatre followed by book signing.
2.30pm - Outdoor flying display at the outdoor arena.
3.00pm - Draw of the raffle and awarding of the best Discworld costume prize at the outdoor arena. Purchase your Discworld raffle tickets around the park today to win some great prizes! Tickets are 1 GBP each and all money raised goes directly to the Birdworld conservation fund.
3.30pm - Penguin feeding with Rob Wilkins at Penguin Beach.
4.00pm - Owl Prowl at the Terry Pratchett Owl Parliament.
6.00pm - Park Closes.
The World Owl Trust works on owl conservation on a national and international scale. Their conservation programmes protect populations of endangered owls until their habitat has been restored. This has already been achieved for the European Eagle Owl and British Barn Owl.
The World Owl Trust president, Tony Warburton, will also be joining us at today's celebrations.

The Terry Pratchett Owl Parliament houses nine different species of Owl. These are Barn Owl, Brown Wood Owl, Burrowing Owl, Boobok Owl, Spectacled Owls, Long Eared Owl, White Faced Owl, Great Horned Owl and Snowy Owl. The exhibit is also decorated with many Discworld references.
Terry always loved seeing his fans dressed as his characters and Birdworld are hoping that many of his fans will come along in costume. To encourage as many as possible to dress up, Birdworld are offering a special rate of just 10 GBP to anyone who arrives in costume.

The Mayor of Beaconsfield will be holding a Charity Appeal on Friday 12th May 2017 at 6:30pm at the Bekonscot Model Village. It will be an evening of exploring creative imaginary worlds and there will be a talk by local author Jacqui Hogan, Deputy Town Mayor, entitled Adventures in Terry Pratchett's Discworld.
Other activities include: a private viewing of the model village, a vignette by The Young Theatre, a buffet and drinks, a sweepstake quiz and a bar.

The Story Museum in Oxford is holding its third Discworld Day on Saturday the 27th May. This year's theme is The Truth and you can take part in all sorts of activities such as taking part in printing workshops, learning how newspapers were before the digital age, create your own newspaper comic, meet Otto Shriek Discworld's only Vampire photographer and pick up your copy of the Ankh Morpork Times to catch up with the latest news.
Normal admission fee applies. The Discworld Day will take place from 10am until 5pm

Cabbagecon 4 will be held at the Hotel Carlton President in Utrecht on 1-2 July 2017.
Some things are unstoppable. Time keeps ticking, spring is upon us and Cabbagecon 4 is approaching ever faster. Our friends at the Ankh-Morpork Tourist Office have assembled a beautifully varied programme that will help us experience a range of aspects of their wondrous city. From the inhabitants and their habits to the culinary treats and the typical city fauna - it
will all have a place in this exploration of the city. Not registered yet? Do so today and join us on 1 and 2 July. You will be surprised at everything the greatest city on the Disc has to offer.
Programme
The programme is starting to fill up nicely. Here's a selection of what you may expect:
- An introduction to the Ankh-Morpork city ecology
- Integration exam (how well do you know the city?)
- An introduction to the city's sociological structure
- Be creative: forge your own stamp
- Crash course: how to survive an authentic Ankh-Morpork bar brawl
- And of course a special treat for the Saturday night
In between activities there will be plenty of time to play (Discworld themed) games, browse around the Wandering Shop and of course chat with other con members.
Rates
Membership will cost 60 euros per person for the whole weekend or 35 euros for a day ticket.
Please note: membership fees will go up on 1 May 2017. From this date a weekend ticket will cost 70 euros and a day ticket will cost 35 euros. So go to dutchdwcon.nl today and sign up before the rates go up!
Hotel
The convention will be held at Hotel Carlton President in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Especially for Cabbagecon they offer a reduced room rate for our members. The rate for a single room is 80 euros per night. For a double room it's 95 euros per room per night. Breakfast is included in these rates, but tourist taxes are not.
You can book your room by sending an e-mail directly to the hotel at info@president.carlton.nl Make sure you mention Cabbagecon 4 and Dutchdwcon in your correspondence with the hotel. The reduced rates are also valid for the nights before and after the convention, so you can stay and enjoy the local hospitality for a few days longer if you like.
For those who prefer not to stay at the convention hotel, there are plenty of (cheaper) alternatives in and around Utrecht. The convention hotel is easily reached by public transport from Utrecht city centre. For a list of hostels in Utrecht, check out the list on the convention website.

"This is an exclusive major exhibition based on the extraordinary life of Sir Terry Pratchett ... It will also feature over forty original illustrations by Paul Kidby"

In my town of Weston-super-Mare we have an annual sand sculpture festival with a different theme each year.
This year the theme is Topsy Turvy. I visited this evening and discovered the artist has created a wonderful sculpture, best described as topsy turvy A-Tuin.
Apart from being as pleased as punch to see this, I just want to share it far and wide.

9. Review: Wyrd Sisters by UWTSD in Lampeter

On a very warm Saturday evening, Jason, Angelina Olding and myself headed up the winding roads to Lampeter to see UWTSD Performing Arts Society's production of Wyrd Sisters.
Wyrd Sisters is the most popular of all of Terry's plays. This year alone we know of 10 different productions of Wyrd Sisters happening across the world so it was wonderful to discover one that was happening so close to home.
UWTSD's campus theatre is a medium sized multi-use hall with a decent light rig and a fair-sized stage which was draped in black curtains. I got the impression we were in for a stripped back version of Wyrd Sisters.
In the opening scene, we got to meet the three witches. Magrat (Katherine Cornelius-Frend) couldn't have been more perfectly cast with her long blonde hair. Her opening screech was spot on. Her costume looked like she had magically taken it off the front cover of the play text (image by Stephen Player). I knew instantly we were in for a treat with this production. Granny (Ruth Birtwistle) and Nanny (played by the wonderfully fun male cast member EJ Taylor) whilst being young, embodied their personas well. EJ had worked hard to get a Somerset accent for Nanny as he's a northern lad and admitted to us afterwards that he found it really difficult to do, but it paid off so well making Nanny sound perfect.
The Fool (Will Russell) made us all feel so sad for him when Magrat stormed off after his return from Ankh Morpork, the first time I have ever seen a whole audience react to this moment so vocally. His portrayal of the fool was one of the best. He truly made the audience believe he was Verence the Fool and made them feel for his plight.
(I really wanted to teach him how to juggle!!! The Dummies Guide to Juggling had me in fits of laughter).
James Perks got the whole demented Duke Felmet across perfectly although there were moments where he was a little domineering over the Duchess (who we all know, was the one who wore the trousers in that relationship!) but that may have been due to the portrayal of the madness rather than it being intentional. His hand rubbing technique was very well done, even the knitting needle came out to play (rare to see a performance with it!).
Finley-Marie Holding nailed that evil snide look that the Duchess uses so often. Even the inflections in her voice were exactly what I hear in my head when reading the book. She obviously had read Wyrd Sisters several times to get that right.
Tomjom and Hwyl were unusually played by female cast members, in this production it was Naomi Pink and Rebecca Evans taking on the duo. They both played their characters enthusiastically and if I had to criticise them in any way, I would say "Don't look at the critics in the audience when performing, we are not the whole audience!"
It was wonderful to see Death make an appearance. He is often cut from Wyrd Sisters so it was a treat to see Ed Lyne bring him to life here. Ed also played Olwyn Vitoller in the production and brought a huge amount of charisma to the stage. He made me smile every time he spoke as his personality shone through his performance.
The cast here was very small for this production. All the minor characters were played by the same six members of cast. Their enthusiasm added so much more to the production than Terry could have ever imagined and it really made it worth the trip to see it.
This company also had next to no budget yet brought Ankh Morpork and Lancre to the stage with not much more than some cardboard, some tin foil, a chair and a clothes airer. Proof that a good performance doesn't need anything more than some actors and some sackcloth and plenty of heart.
I really hope they do more Discworld plays as it was such a joy to see a company bring the fun back to a Pratchett production.
A little note. A big round of applause to the back stage and lighting/sound crew. No-one ever thanks them but Megan Mullins (director) Lauren and Kieran (and any other crew) did a fab job for no pay and even less thanks. We appreciate all the hard work that goes into these productions. We will bring a cake next time for the interval!
10. Review: MORT by ROSTRA at Bangor University

When DWM told me that there was an actual Discworld play happening near to me there was no way I was not going! Even a back to back 6 & 8 hour shift on the night/day the clocks went forward wasn't going to stop me. So on Sunday night, slightly deficient in the sleep department, Mike and I headed off for Bangor University to see ROSTRA's Production of Mort as adapted by Stephen Briggs.
We picked up a snack from a local store that was in keeping with seeing a Discworld production - chicken on a stick though slightly superior to anything offered by CMOT Dibbler!
The cast were also the box office staff so we were greeted by Death and Albert. The start of the play was slightly delayed as the owners of the hall had taken down one of the curtains over the side windows and the theatre could not be made dark enough until the sun set over the Menai Straits. However Death and Albert sat and talked with us as did the director and a pleasant half hour was spent discussing how we had heard about the performance and our favourite Discworld novels.
The cast and crew did a great job and used stage lighting to great effect. For the scenes where Death and Mort used the scythe a cold blue light was shone. In the scenes at Death's House the lighting was kept dim to denote the general blackness of Death's country. They did not go for fancy scene changes but used a simple black backdrop and used various props to show different places such as a study desk for Death's Study and simple stage flats for doors. The door for Cutwell's house was done very well with a small window in it for the actor playing the doorknocker to stick his head through and was made more effective by keeping that part of the set in the shadows.
The main characters of Mort (Julia Hall) and Death (James Abison) were excellently portrayed. Death had just the right sort of deep tone to his voice and Mort came over very well as the lanky awkward lad that nobody wanted to hire at the hiring fair. There was also Albert (Darren Roberts) who did a good job of being the cantankerous, short-tempered wizard turned Death's manservant. They were ably supported by Ysabelle (Natasha Blackmore) who gave the role just the right touch of romanticism, hankering after all the love stories in the library, Princess Keli (Hannah Williams), played with great royal snobbishness and Igneous Cutwell (Toby Leverett), a slightly smooth ingratiating wizard who has been appointed Royal Recogniser. All of the main cast members took on the role of narrator at various points where the play needed to be explained/moved on. One cameo role which I loved was of Rincewind in the scenes when Albert returned to UU in an attempt to summon Death in the Rite of AshkEnte. Dressed in shabby robe and even shabbier wizzard's hat he gave a wonderful impression of a cowardly wizzard about to make a run for it!
I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and feel sorry that there were only a handful of people in the audience. I hope that this is just because we went on the Sunday night and that the Friday and Saturday night were better attended as the cast deserved much better than an audience of less than 10 people. I shall certainly keep my eye out for further Discworld productions by this company.
Right, if you would excuse me must be off - I don't know about you but I could murder a curry!
11. Review: Carpe Jugulum in Nottingham

I went to see Carpe Jugulum performed by LMT Youth Theatre at The Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham on Saturday 25th March 2017.
The theatre staff were very welcoming and they sell alcohol, so I ordered myself a cider and kept a lookout for fellow fans that know me. I was wearing my jester hat so fellow fans could recognise me. I was soon joined by two very familiar faces, Allan and Joycee and they joined me for drink.
If you wished to you could pre-order your interval drinks. Some of the cast were selling programs, so we all bought one. We also got given an Omnian leaflet.
It was soon time to take our seats and we had to transfer our drinks into plastic glasses before going into the auditorium. A member of staff approached me and offered to put my rucksack into a cupboard so it would be out of the way.
The curtains were open on stage so you could see the scenery of a castle and the stage floor was painted green and had trees in each corner.
The actors entered the stage not just from the wings but also from auditorium entrance and below the stage.
The play was very well acted and we were very impressed with Adelaide who played Granny Weatherwax.
If you have not seen a Discworld play I encourage you all to go and see one.
I had a fantastic time and it really made my evening meet up with Allan and Joycee.

Review of Carpe Jugulum Discworld play, performed at the Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham 25th March
I have been a huge Discworld fan ever since childhood, however I had not had the pleasure of seeing a Discworld play as they had all been too far from home to visit. Therefore, I was thrilled to find that the Lace Market Theatre in Nottingham was putting on Carpe Jugulum. Not only was it close enough to travel to but was also one of my most favourite books and being performed on my birthday. It being a birthday present was a good enough reason to convince my family to go see the play with me, as they are not Discworld fans. My partner knew of the Discworld as he had played the video games years ago and my mum had seen the Sky dramatizations. However, my 12-year-old daughter had absolutely no prior knowledge of the world and so I have included their perspectives in this review.
Unfortunately we managed to miss the first couple of minutes of the play because of parking issues (a note to anyone travelling to the Lace Market Theatre with a transit van, it will not fit in the multi-storey car park, there is more parking further away down the hill). We did, however, manage to catch most of the introduction, which was very cleverly done. As the narrators introduced the characters, the rest of the cast froze on the spot - this was a very good effect as it gave the audience a chance to get to know who everyone was before the action started. This was very useful for my daughter, who is autistic and often struggles with identifying characters or following a lot of dialogue when she doesn't know the background to it.
Perhaps the most surprising first impression was that the actors were all quite young, teens to early 20's. Because I hadn't actually realized that it was a youth theatre group but this did not detract from the story at all. In fact it was lovely to see the Discworld being enjoyed by a younger generation. The acting was great, with only a very few moments of nerves showing.
The costumes were very nicely suited to the characters. I really enjoyed the hodgepodge armour of Shaun Ogg as the castle guard. The well worn, hardworking black of the witches was in stark contrast to the vampires, who were cool, sexy and refined with an arrogant air of sophistication, outshining the rest of the cast, as to be expected.
Everyone performed their roles beautifully and the twists and turns of the story were as captivating as on the written page. However, there were a couple of stand-out performances in a cast of very talented up and coming actors. One was the Count de Magpyr, who was splendidly played by a very talented actress in a silk top hat and round hippy glasses. She delivered a powerful performance with a polished, arrogant upper-class accent which was slowly changed into a broad rural drawl as Granny Weatherwax took control of him. The witches were all excellent: Granny Weatherwax was a tower of strength, Nanny Ogg was bawdy and Magrat was the engrossed new mother. But it was Agnes who was most fascinating because while she was played as a worried young witch, the confident and slightly cruel Perdita was actually played by another actress who wasn't supposed to be seen by the rest of cast. I thought that this was an excellent way of portraying the character.
Our favourite though had to be the right Honourable Reverend Mightily Oats. He practically leapt off the page, with all the religious belief, self doubt, courage, nervousness, determination and more that he was written with. In fact the performance was so enthralling that it was difficult to spot that it was actually an actress playing the troubled priest.
Perhaps the only character that was a little difficult for my family to understand was Igor, mostly because of the lisp and it does help to have a bit of background knowledge about the Igors to get all the jokes, but Scraps was a firm favourite.
On the whole it was a very enjoyable experience for all of us, my family were introduced to the wonderful world of the Witches of Lancre and I got a brilliant birthday treat.
12. Dodger Live - 1st April 2017

After a minor incident involving inadvertently trying to go in through the wrong gate of a large military establishment, the long-suffering husband and I found ourselves in a large, purpose-built theatre in the middle of a naval training base in Fareham. By the time we had our seats, the cast were setting up mock fights in front of the stage to entertain the audience before the performance.
Dodger is, I have to admit, my favourite of Sir Terry's non-Discworld books. I know many people are huge fans of some of his other literature, but something about this one always resonates with me and I find the humour in it fantastic.
However, it's the first time I'd seen the adaptation and as with a film version of your favourite book, I always find myself approaching them with trepidation. But it was entirely unfounded. OK, I missed Solomon's dog Onan, but I guess it's not always easy to have an appropriately pungent hound on stage! As for the remaining characters, Mrs Quickly was disgracefully fabulous, Dodger was the wide boy he should be and as for Solomon, I don't think I've seen such a good bit of casting in a while.
One lovely thing was that during the interval, and before the performance, many of the cast were out & about with the audience, to the point where Mr Dickens, at the end of the interval sitting with members of the audience was heard to exclaim 'Oh wait, I'm not supposed to be watching, I'm supposed to be on the stage!'. Mind you, one poor audience member got a sound ear bashing from Mrs Sharples mid-interval too.
Overall, Dodger is another great stage adaptation by Stephen Briggs, but in this instance executed excellently by a clearly accomplished cast who really care about what they are doing and the audience experience. There is not one element I would criticise, I even found it hard to find anything wrong with the fight scenes, which for me is unusual - perhaps it's all the military training coming in handy! Oh, and I think that Dickens chap might go far with those snappy book titles.

14. Review Paul Kidby's Terry Pratchett Bust

This morning we set out for the N.E.C. Birmingham to see the bust of Sir Terry that was on display at the Art of Imagination stall. We got there quite early and found the stand easily. They had set the statue in a small alcove next to their main stand with a piece of Paul Kidby's artwork for the Johnny and the Bomb series above it.
It was beautiful and extremely detailed and a good likeness. It has obviously been produced with a lot of love and care. After having a lovely conversation with the stallholder he showed us how the hat is separate from the statue. This has been partly done because the local people of Salisbury know Terry as a kind and generous man but not so much as our black-hatted author. This made sense to me as at most conventions Terry always had 2 badges. One for when he was "Terry the Author" and one for when he was just a convention guest and wanted a bit of privacy.
It was obvious talking to the stall holder that Terry was loved locally just as much as we all love him, which also was a nice thing to hear. The bronze was wonderful and a very personal tribute to a wonderful man and author. I can see lots of people thinking how nice it would be to own one but these bronzes are meant as a memorial to the great man and only a few are being made for those very close to him. I can understand that too, to keep it special and meaningful it has to stay a small run.
It was quite moving to stand in front of it and wonder what Terry would have thought. The more I stood and looked the more I understood why it has to stay personal to his family and close friends. We will all have the big statue to look at and visit and maybe in the future a commercial bust of Terry may be made available for sale, but this one is meant as a dedication to Terry's memory for those that miss him the most.
Paul Kidby should be commended for his attention to detail and the wonderful expression he has managed to capture - just a hint of amusement, the only thing that is missing is the glint in his eyes - but this isn't Terry, it is just a beautiful bust of him which does both Sir Terry Pratchett and Paul Kidby proud.
