Welcome to issue 266 of Discworld Monthly. I'd like to start by thanking all you lovely readers who wrote in emails of support after my little rant in the last editorial. I've had time to reflect on what was said and have to say that most Discworld fans are the best people in the world.
Sadly this month we have to say farewell to the lovely Jack Cohen (co-author of the Science of Discworld books and veteran of many Discworld Conventions) who sadly passed away on the 6th May.
I loved attending some of Jack's talks at the various Discworld Convention were he tried hard to explain science and I tried hard to understand it.

This upcoming bank holiday weekend is going to be very special for us. We have Daniel Knight direct of Troll Bridge coming to visit and he, special effects supervisor Christian Bloch and Cohen himself, actor Don Bridges will be attending the European Premiere of Troll Bridge, just a few minutes drive from us in Llanelli. We hope that many of the 400 fans that are making the trip to the other Wild West (see the Witch's Vacuum Cleaner) will come in costume. I don't think Llanelli will know what's going to hit it.
It's going to be so much fun catching up with so many of our friends and getting the opportunity to show of what an amazingly beautiful part of the world we live in.

2.1 Troll Bridge European Premiere
Don't forget, the premiere happens on Monday 27th May at 1pm in the Ffwrnes Theatre in Llanelli. Make sure you are there for around 12.30pm to allow time to get everyone into the theatre.
We would love to see you all in costume at this amazing opportunity to be part of this wonderful event which includes a Q&A with director Daniel Knight, VFX Supervisor Christian Bloch and actor Don Bridges.
The Q&A should start around 1.30pm after the screening and even if you cannot attend in person, you can watch the Q&A on Facebook over at Carmarthen Bay Film Festival's Facebook page.
So far 400 fans have got tickets, currently there are no more tickets available.* There are plenty more fans wanting tickets so if you cannot attend, please state so on the Facebook event page so other fans can find you and you can email them your tickets.
There are already offers of spare tickets on the event page from others - If you want to come, snap them up! No-one should charge you for the tickets as they were free in the first place so please don't pay for them!
We will be around the Ffwrnes Theatre from 12 noon before the European Premiere so come along and meet up with the crew, the Discworld Monthly team and the huge amount of fans who will be attending.
After the event, many fans, including the cast and crew of the film will be celebrating in the bar of the theatre for many hours until we have to move to a local pub later in the evening. DO join us as everyone will be more than happy to have selfies, sign stuff and generally have lots of fun for the rest of the day!
Do keep an eye on the Facebook event page called European Premiere 'Troll Bridge' by SnowGum Films for additional information right up until the event itself as we will now be posting about the event there instead of sending out extra newsletters.
Troll Bridge has been entered into the Short Film Category and here we will get to see the 25 minute version of the film. We will find out at the Awards dinner on the 30th May if Troll bridge has won. Do keep an eye out on our Social Media Channels for that news !
* For those who have already reserved tickets, great news, your tickets are still valid for the new larger screen. If your tickets was for the second showing please ensure you turn up for the 1pm showing (ignore the time in your ticket and be there for the one big screening at 1pm) .
↑≡2.2 Good Omens Events
On May 31st Good Omens drops onto Amazon Prime. To celebrate this momentous occasion there are several events taking place, including a talk with Neil Gaiman and friends, a premiere in the UK and an Immersive experience in a popup book shop in London.
There will also be an Art exhibition called Good Icons in June. Further details below.

Saturday 1st - Sunday 2nd June: A. Z. Fell Book Store Immersive Experience and Escape Room
Location: 19 Greek Street, Soho, London
Fans of the book may recognise the bookshop 'A.Z. Fell and Co.' when it appears in Greek Street in Soho, with the show's 1934 Bentley Derby Coupe parked outside.
Modelled on the character Aziraphale's run down bookshop hideout, the unassuming facade might well be overlooked by those not in the know. However on entry it will quickly become clear that this is no ordinary bookshop as it is a five-floor immersive experience and exhibition
Fans will be given the chance to explore immersive set replicas, take on an escape room challenge starting in a recreation of hell, explore a rich array of props and costumes from the show and discover original artwork and on-set drawings from acclaimed portrait artist Lorna May Wadsworth.
The full experience is free of charge, and entry to the exhibition elements will be through walk-ins.
The Escape Room sold out in just 5 minutes.

All six episodes of Good Omens will be shown on the big screen at the VUE OMNI CENTRE
as part of the Edinburgh International film festival.
It's an amazing opportunity to see the whole series on the Big Screen.
The showing will be on Saturday 29th June 2019 1pm - 7pm and tickets go on sale on Wednesday 29th May at 10am.

↑≡2.3 Good Omens - Soundtrack
It appears Good Omens full soundtrack will be made available as they tease us all with the opening titles which are now available to download.
David Arnold expertly crafted the harmonious melodies which grace the entire series which is influenced by the rock gods that are Queen. That doesn't mean you won't hear Queen's Greatest Hits in the series. Queen gave their permission for several of their tracks to be included in the series including Bohemian Rhapsody in Crowley's Bentley.

↑≡2.4 Waterstones Exclusive Editions of Good Omens and 2020 Discworld Calendar
Waterstones seems to have gained a plethora of exclusive special editions.
First up is a special edition of the novel Good Omens.
It's specially designed cover and end-papers are exclusive to Waterstones.
It is also the first to contain the definitive text of the book which we believe is the same text that will be in the new Definitive Illustrated Editions .

Next years calendar will be filled with Paul Kidby's artwork of the destinations of the Disc.
Titled Discworld Destinations, the 2020 Calendar will be available form the 22nd August and will cost 14.99GBP

The Calendar for 2021 has also popped up on the radar. It hasn't got a title yet but it looks confirmed that there will be one and currently the release date is 20th August 2020
↑≡2.5 The Troll Bridge Tour
There has been a couple of announcements of future screenings, one of which is the North American premiere..

And just in case you are not a Backer and you want to be.
Troll Bridge's contract states that they can continue raising money while they are still in a position to spend money [on the film!] . Once the film has been completed and outstanding expenses covered, SnowGum Films may need to close off DVD availability.
So if you want it on DVD or Blu-ray, order it now as you may not be able to get it later!

MicroArt Studio has a special set of miniatures available to commemorate Terry's birthday.

↑≡4. Memories of Jack Cohen

Memories of Jack
By the time I first met Jack Cohen, in the mid-nineties, I had already been a Discworld fan about a decade (and even met Terry by that point) . I was therefore somewhat impressed to find out that he was the person after whom Cohen the Barbarian had been named. I had gone to Warwick University to do a Master of Science course and from that, have the proud distinction of being "one of Jack's students". Although he officially taught me Human Ecology, he also taught me to ask questions such as why, after the introduction of compulsory seatbelts in cars, were more people admitted to hospital following road traffic accidents than had been previously*. Not only that, but he taught me how to persuade a class to ask questions by deliberately inserting stuff that most people wouldn't know about, and then calling us out on it (I've used that trick myself later on in life) . Jack was a member of the faculty (as was Ian) , and I've no doubt that his experience helped to provide a lot of the colour for the faculty of the Unseen University.
Of course, it wouldn't be long before the first Science of Discworld book was published and I had the great pleasure of renewing my acquaintance with Jack at the Discworld conventions at the Hinckley Island Hotel where he was on the guest list. Not only did I have inside knowledge not to miss his talks (which included a lot of human reproductive biology) , and was able to enjoy his company in the bar in the evening. I also have a memorable moment of one breakfast time when Jack joined me in the queue, and as we got our food, saw Terry sitting on his own. "I'm not letting him do that, the miserable sod" said Jack, and took me over to have breakfast with Terry.
After 2006, I was unable to get to the conventions for a few years (until 2016 when the kids were old enough to want to come with me) and although I exchanged the occasional message with Jack over Facebook, I didn't realise I'd already seen him for the last time. In 2016 he was due to attend but had to pull out recovering from an operation on his throat (would have liked to be there but couldn't speak) and in 2018 he was unable to travel. I was able take the opportunity to phone and speak with him at the end of that weekend.
A lovely man, who it has been my privilege to know. Long let his name be spoken.
*For those who still wondered, the additional hospital admittances would previously have been counted as fatalities instead.
↑≡5. Review: Irish Discworld Convention 2019

We arrived a just after 10am on the Friday of the convention after leaving out house some 11 hours previously. We decided to drive rather that fly and the included four hours of driving and a five hour ferry crossing. We were pleasantly surprised to find, when we enquired at the reception, that our room was ready fo us. So after recruiting the help of some friends we were soon installed in the hotel and ready for the Convention.
The Irish Convention was the first Discworld Convention we'd been to outside of England and we didn't really know what to expect. I'd been told it was a more relaxed event than the International Conventions so I was excited to find out how it compared.
Firstly, the regional conventions, by their very nature a much smaller than the International Convention so they immediately feel more intimate. We very soon feel in with the relaxed attitude towards timings of events etc. We spend much of the weekend sat in the large, spacious reception area chatting with friends both old and new.
We did go to several events over the weekend and were even involved in a couple, we helped out at the Auction, were part of the guest of honour interview along with Daniel Knight of Snowgum films and we hosted an hour long talk about the history of Discworld Monthly. The hour went very quickly and I think the audience enjoyed our reenactments of parts of "Mort: The Almost Musical", come and ask us about it sometime. We're always happy to explain that one.
I was even asked to stand in for an absent member of one of the Unseen University Challenge quiz for the grand final. Having found I was now a member of "Sixth time Lucky" I probably should have done my research first. The questions were fiendishly difficult but I think I managed to hold me own. We were, sadly, soundly beaten but it was really enjoyable, I think I can probably guess that name of the team for next time!
We picked up some fun items from the Convention's merchandise stall such as the miniature shot glasses shaped like beer tankards and picked up a range of wonderfully designed bookmarks.
There was a dealers corridor where, a representative from Waterstones was selling a wide range of books and the House of Freyja were on hand to sell you cloaks and witches hats.
Throughout the event there was an ongoing story arc about the elections in Schnapp (the Uberwaldian town the Convention was set in) . We particularly enjoyed Anne R Key the dwarf's antidisestablishment slogans. So were many other attendees it seems as even though she Anne R Key wasn't up for election she won. This was all, of course a complete waste of time as the Mayor wasn't actually missing he was just on holiday - thanks to Stephen Briggs for being the Mayor and sending videos from foreign parts.
It was so much fun to see so many people enjoying themselves, especially pleasing was seeing Benard and Isobel Pearson having so much fun with the rest of us fans. This was the most relaxed, inclusive and comfortable we've been made to feel at a convention so a huge amount of thanks needs to go to the wonderful volunteers that gave up so much of their time to make the event so enjoyable. We had an absolute blast and hope to make it back to the next one in 2021.

I think Jason must have misremembered our conversation. I asked him where he got the questions from because I always find them so difficult. I'm doing well if I get one or two right. There was no need to make 'em harder.
On a serious note, I'd like to say that I am disgusted at the vitriolic reaction and awful behaviour of some people with regard to the new book covers. People who would do that are not 'fans'. Any true fan of Terry would never behave in the ways you reported. It makes me feel almost ashamed to be a Pratchett fan.

As a U.S. fan of Terry Pratchett, I have always felt bad that more people over here have not been exposed to Terry and his wonderful books. At the very least, every 11-year-old girl should read Equal Rights regardless of where they live, Discworld or flat world. If different covers help spread Terry's words, all the better. The one thing Terry Pratchett was in all of his books was endlessly creative. He found more ways to reach people through humor and wisdom than any other writer I have encountered. If he is to be spinning in his grave over anything, I think it would be the idea that everything must remain unchanged, locked in stasis, and not open to reaching out to new readers.
Bravo for your willingness to open new doors to readers and to try different approaches.

I've been subscribed for an age now, reading the latest edition I felt compelled to contact you.
I was raised on Terry's works, getting two books every year was better than Christmas. They'd get passed through my family within three days of being on the shelves. I'd read each page and would rarely sleep before finishing. Later on in life at the age of 29 I remember being in the Emporium in Wincanton when Terry called up to ask Bern about a witch they'd been talking about, only to see that name pop up in I Shall Wear Midnight. Giddy as a schoolgirl to think I was that close to where this world we all love is summoned from. That's enough backstory I guess, you get the idea.
To think that you, of all people, should have had to face vitriolic backlash for doing a voluntary service for the fandom. For promoting new editions. I am boggled. Completely.
From a loony Australian now living in Japan; allow me to say this.
Thank you sincerely for your time and efforts. I honestly look forward to your button badges that will come with my copy of Troll Bridge. I spoke with Daniel the other day too, poor bugger is still copping flak for showing the fillum at festivals and conventions by backers less patient than myself.
I'll repeat something I said to him too.
When things get rather heavy and people get angry. What would Terry Do? I think he said it best.

I seldom write my thoughts and send them in (sorry Rachel) but the "fan" reaction to the new covers - Guards! Guards!, Mort, and Wyrd Sisters - has my dander up. Herein my rant:
Liking or not liking any particular cover of a book is fine, an amusing source of debate among friends and fans. But getting ANGRY about a cover? Seriously? That's crazy talk. Calm down people! The new covers will not replace the old editions, you will not be disenfranchised, no one will come to your home and surreptitiously replace your beloved copies with new ones. People who like the new covers might enjoy a calm, reasoned discussion of the merits of each cover illustration, but you will be free to avoid such a conflab should you prefer not to engage.
In summary, let me say: STOP IT! Sir Terry Pratchett fans SHOULD NOT BE ACTING LIKE THIS!
Please note that I avoided using multiple exclamation marks. I would bet a silk pajama that some of those complaining were less restrained. (And possibly should be restrained.)

May I suggest that, as these have been written by a master storyteller, it is advised that they will be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age.
Replies: We agree, but the publishers obviously have a plan about how they want to market things. I've read many "young adult" books in the last few years and I certainly couldn't be considered a young anything any more!

The Definitive Good Omens, (or The Illustrated Good Omens (no-one seems to have decided what to call it even though the cover says The Definitive Good Omens)) illustrated by Paul Kidby NOW has a release date of the 23rd May. With 12 full colour illustrations plus numerous line drawings by the amazing Paul Kidby, this definitive version of the text has had all the typos and errors corrected by Neil Gaiman and the Pratchett Estate.
Coming out in a standard and a slipcase edition by Gollancz it is due out on the 23rd May 2019.
