↑≡1. Editorial

Welcome to issue 280 and yet another month into the 2020 pandemic. Things had started to open up again but it looks like we may well be heading for a second lockdown. The lift on restrictions means that the team making The Watch TV series have just wrapped on filming. This means they can go all out on post production for release in early 2021.

As Jason just said above, The Watch has just wrapped, and whilst I have done my best to keep my opinion of the show neutral, I can finally admit how I feel about Simon Allen, the showrunner of The Watch.

He seems to genuinely think he is funnier than the creator of the world he has been privileged to play in. He stood on stage at the BBC showcase and stated that Terry would have loved his version of The Watch. This is a man who has never met Terry. Even Terry's family would never profess to know what Terry was thinking.

To claim he wrote the first line of The Watch and then actually fail to thank Terry in his Instagram post was the last straw for me personally.

We thank Terry Pratchett every day for allowing us to play in his world, life wouldn't be the same without his influence.

↑≡2. News

2.1 The Watch TV series - Panel at New York Comic Con

With the release date of the series being January 2021, the marketing for the series has finally decided to step up a gear.

Unfortunately with Covid-19 causing cancellations of ComicCons everywhere, the usual live Q&A style panels will not be happening and it is a pity because we firmly believe that the team who created The Watch series really need to see the public reaction to the show they have created.

As it happens, New York ComicCon will be virtual this year, with most of the panels being broadcast for free on Youtube which mean no live Q&A. It does mean you should be able to use the comments box to express your opinion on what is shown.

The Watch will have a panel on Friday 8th October at 1.30 ET with the cast, showrunner Simon Allen and executive producer Richard Stokes being interviewed by Yvette Nicole Brown.

We will also get a first look at the series. This will be the first time a teaser trailer will be shown online to the public. The Youtube link for the panel won't go live until closer to the date, and we will make sure we send out the link via our Facebook page and our Twitter feed.

Until then, you can explore what little is available on New York ComicCon Website and their online convention website called Metaverse

The New York ComicCon NYCC Youtube channel is already in place ready for the event which starts on the 8th October 2020.

↑≡2.2 Discworld Monthly September Online Quiz

Our first online quiz was a huge success even if the questions were a bit hard! We did spend quite a bit of time after the quiz talking about various things with everyone who wished to stay for a bit of a chat. It was nice to catch up with various fans and give away a few secrets.

Whilst there is no prize, the person who got most questions correct was the very knowledgeable Vincent Oberheim!

Our September quiz will take place on Thursday 24th September at 8pm BST.

Jason will be writing this one, so hopefully it won't be as evil as the August one which Rachel wrote.

We anticipate it will be approx an hour long so please make sure you have pens, paper and enough liquid and snacks to last you however long it takes.

We only have room for 100 people as that is the Zoom level we have paid for, so make sure you get in the waiting room at 8pm BST.

As with all Zoom events, we would prefer people used headphones and a mic or sat in a quiet room without any disturbances. We don't want to mute people if we can help it, but if interruptions from outside influences become too much, we will have no choice but to mute individuals. We love interaction, but it is a big room with lots of people in it so be mindful !

If you don't have Zoom on your PC/Mac/Tablet/Phone, there will be a version of the quiz placed on Youtube a day or so after the event. We will be recording the Zoom one, but have found that re-recording the quiz will work better for viewing on Youtube.

Culture Night - Terry Pratchett at the Unseen University

Each year, on Culture Night, researchers from across Trinity College Dublin and beyond come together to create an interactive event, celebrating Terry Pratchett's life, work, and his connection with Trinity. This year, they will be holding a series of short, online presentations in subjects as diverse as brain health and children's literature, all with Terry Pratchett at their core.

Terry donated 1 million dollars to research Alzheimer's Disease after being diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease in 2007.

The funds raised through donations to the Pratchett Project Conference 2020 will be used in conjunction with funds raised by other activities of the Pratchett Project this year to help push their research forward.

The Good Omens TV series fandom is quite strong and last year they held their very first convention with approximately 100 people in attendance.

↑≡4. Review: The Time-travelling Caveman

The Time-travelling Caveman is the fourth and probably final anthology of short stories Terry wrote when he was working as a journalist at The Bucks Free Press under the moniker of Uncle Jim.

Where the first book Dragons at Crumbling Castle treated us to the introduction to the Carpet People there was nothing in Caveman that would be later developed. As with the previous books each story is quite short and is usually designed to be a build up to a final joke.

The titular Time-travelling Cavemen is a fun little story that isn't actually about time travel (well not like Back To The Future of Quantum Leap) . I enjoyed each of the stories. They are obviously not as polished as Terry's longer works but I still find it fascinating plotting the journey between journalist and best sell author. It's sometimes hard to believe that the same, although somewhat more experienced writer, that wrote the brilliant Night Watch was also responsible for the whimsical Lemonade on the Moon.

I think there is something to enjoy in each and every story in this anthology. Many themes and ideas that Terry explores in these stories would later be expanded upon in the Discworld and beyond. I loved The Wild Knight in which Terry explores what a character would do if they became a night - something which Terry experienced during his own lifetime - the character in the story made his own sword but unlike Terry traveled back in time to living with Arthur at Camelot. Unless that's what Terry actually did!? Has anyone checked the woodcuts from the Arthurian legends just in case?

The book itself is beautifully illustrated. The pages are full of fun and manic illustrations and if you take the dusk jacket off you will find the hardback is also beautifully coloured.

The slip case edition will be released later this year and will feature one more story than the standard edition.

If, as I suspect, it will be that very last anthology of Terry's lesser known works I think it is a fitting end. Go get your own copy and make up your own mind. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

↑≡5. Review of The Magic of Terry Pratchett

I believe I first heard about this book around 18 months ago at a fan gathering. The view around the table was mixed, there were many that said, "I'm not reading that, it's not written by Rob Wilkins, it won't be official". I was intrigued, having read some biographies of other people that are full of padding and frankly, terrible. This wasn't.

Marc Burrows writes in a nice flowing style which is easy to read. The book does appear to be well researched and is written in a light hearted tone. There were many things that I did not know, some that I did. In fact the author appears to be quite self effacing. He acknowledges that there will be another, official, biography published at some later date. I only noted one mistake, and it is obvious.

This book follows Terry's life mainly chronologically from his childhood, through his journalist and PR careers and the books that were being written at the time. It also does a good job describing to us how Terry became the man that he was. I only noticed a small bit of padding and this may only be because I know the novels so well. I don't need the plots explained. However, if you have not yet read all of Terry's works this, most likely, won't be a problem. In fact it is something the author notes. He would have liked to review all of Terry's works in more detail but it would have made this book at least twice as long. I thought, 'yes please, let's have a separate book – or books – on this.'

One thing I did not like was the amount of footnotes. We all know that Terry was a prodigious user of them, but here there were too many. Sometimes over fifteen per chapter and occasionally multiple notes per page. It really interrupted the flow of the book.* There were a couple of occasions when I disagreed with the author – I like the David Greenslade album. Especially the Wizard's Staff…. song. But these are minor gripes.

It does appear to end a bit suddenly. We are bowling along nicely and then I realise there are only 3 chapters left, but we are only around 2003. The last few books and all of the Embuggerance is covered in only 34 pages. That said, it is covered with sensitivity and the last few paragraphs did leave me with a slight lump in my throat.

To summarise, this is a good read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. As the author acknowledges this will not be the definitive biography of Terry Pratchett, but it serves well enough until that one is published. To those fans who are waiting for the other book, give this one a go.

Like many Pterry fans I've been rereading my favourite DW novels since the pandemic hit…or re-listening rather - my early mass market PBs long since fell apart - as I'm doing the audio-book thing lately. I've been impressed at their quality and may just purchase the entire series again.

To me he was clearly referring to the years of development The Watch was in, before this successful attempt. But YMMV. Clearly something about the more traditional approaches wasn't sparking the imagination within the various BBC departments and companies.

This adaptation doesn't seem to be what I would go for in a TP TV series, but the inclusivity in its casting is admirable. Actually, more than admirable, any show filling its cast with queer, trans and differently-abled actors and writers, in a media environment that is still hostile to anything other than token representation, is already doing great work. The increasing diversity of the Watch is a theme in the books, so it's great that they're realising it in real-world terms as well as fantasy ones. I can take or leave the steampunk aesthetic. My main problem so far is that the Discworld Watch are essentially unattractive losers who occasionally do heroic things, whereas the photos of The Watch released so far show attractive people in nice clothes doing cool poses. My speculation is that The Watch will be an empowerment narrative - society's losers become the heroes - which isn't unfaithful to the books. My worry is that if the team is coded as "cool" to the audience, but are "losers" in the narrative, the story won't fly emotionally speaking, and it will all be a bit shallow.

However, as fun as speculation is, it's irresponsible to judge a piece of art before you've actually seen it. Its advertising doesn't appeal to you? Don't watch the show. But no-one has actually watched an episode. Signs aren't great, but who knows what it's actually going to be like? Fandom is putting the hatred before the horse here, as it sadly too often does.

Of course, most if not all of the productions that would normally appear here have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. We really hope that once the current situation has resolved itself the productions will be rescheduled and we can get our regular dose of Pratchett performances.

Whilst we would love to get to every event and play to write reviews and articles about them, we just don't have enough time, petrol and a wide enough spread of friends to borrow the couch for the night. But you, our wonderful readers do have the time, petrol and often don't need the couches as the event or play is on your doorstep!

We don't have English degrees here and you don't need one either to write something for Discworld Monthly!

We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though. We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century.
