Welcome to issue 217. We are now well into the middle of July and the weather in the UK is improving. We did hope to get this month's issue out at the beginning of July but we have been awaiting some additional legal information from Narrativia's lawyers. Today I made the decision not to wait any longer - the statement from them with regards to TreeFrog Games will now hopefully appear in issue 218.
This month things have settled down Discworld-wise for us at Discworld Monthly, though we have seen the release of The Long Utopia, book four of the The Long Earth series. Apparently Terry's involvement in book five has already been written - so expect that at some point in the future.
More excitingly we have seen the blurb for The Shepherd's Crown... The final Discworld novel. We'll include details in the News section...
We have received official word from Terry's lawyers about preserving Terry's Intellectual Property - it really is essential reading for those considering making Discworld / Terry Pratchett related items.
Finally on our way back from Bournemouth at the beginning of the month we stopped in Salisbury to visit the Discworld Knight - Paul Kidby's amazing painted baron on the Barons' Charter Trail. We liked the Discworld Knight so much we purchased one of Paul's Discworld Massif posters from his site www.paulkidby.com/

Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is definitely over as daughter Rhianna rules out future books. The article in The Independent reads: "...fans of his fantasy series speculated that his daughter Rhianna, a video game writer, may take up the baton and pen some herself.
But earlier this month, Rhianna said that she will not be writing any Discworld books or giving "anyone else permission to do so"".

The Telegraph recently featured an article about Janet Campbell-Dick the teacher that inspired Terry to write. Janet "May" Campbell-Dick died in 1985 just two years after The Colour of Magic was published, so never realised how successful Terry would become. The heart-warming article features a few snippets about Terry's school time that I didn't know about.

Martin Wallace who produced Discworld: Ankh-Morpork and The Witches games and was in the process of developing a third Discworld game has announced on his Treefrog facebook page that his licence has not been renewed and he will no longer be able to produce copies of the existing games, and the third game will never be produced.

It appears that 2015 will be the last year Backspindle Games will be able to publish their first Discworld game Guards! Guards! The good news is that their new game Clacks is currently available on pre-order and will be published in October.

In SFX 263 (with The Men from UNCLE on the cover) they have to pick just one book by Terry for their Top 20 books in no special order - and they chose Night Watch! On page 76.
It's a cross-subgenre selection, from SF, fantasy and horror.
Then on page 109 is a review of Long Utopia.
The Spanish section of The Wall Street Journal International features an article on Terry Pratchett entitled El Esopo del Siglo XX (The 20th Century Aesop)... Not being a Spanish speaker I can't tell you what it is about. I did try Google Translate but it wasn't easy to read in translated English so I gave up.

Issue 120 of Foundation - The International Review of Science Fiction features Terry on its front cover. Inside it features tributes from Stephen Baxter, Stephen Briggs, Andrew M. Butler, Neil Gaiman, Edward James, Paul Kidby, Farah Mendlesohn and Ian Stewart.

News from the Bookseller. On 19th June the children's preview for September featured The Shepherd's Crown: "This one obviously has crossover appeal to a huge audience across readers of both YA and adult titles."
While the fiction preview for October on 3rd July mentions that the Discworld Atlas is bound to be a top seller (though priced at 25GBP).
Terry's books have been featuring in the Bookseller charts this June. A Slip of the Keyboard got into the Top 20 non-fiction paperbacks. Pratchett and Baxter's The Long Utopia shot straight up to no. 2 in the Top 20 original fiction, also at no. 30 in the top 50 books of all categories, in The Bookseller of 26th June.
If you happen to subscribe to the Sunday Times Culture or the Guardian Saturday Review you'll find Terry's books featuring in their charts as well.
Lady Sybil
The June issue of Folklore will carry an obituary of Terry by Jacqueline Simpson. The journal is published by Taylor & Francis. It's not a full-scale obituary, I concentrated on the folkloric and personal angles.

The Turtle Moves: A documentary made by the friends and fans of Sir Terry, remembering how his words and the Disc impacted their lives.
A man is not dead while his name is still spoken - Terry Pratchett, Going Postal
Terry Pratchett was a beloved figure at Worldcons for over 30 years. In this, the year of his passing, we're filming a love letter to Terry in the form of a fan-made documentary at Sasquan / Worldcon 2015. Our film will be based on interviews with attending fans who are willing to share their memories of Terry and tell stories about the way the Discworld books have changed their lives.
This is an excellent time to make our film as The Great Discworld Fan Gathering is set to take place at Sasquan; a first for any Worldcon. There have always been Discworld fans at Worldcons but this will be the first time we've asked them to come out in force, and proudly state that The Turtle Moves.
Sasquan, in their turn, has welcomed Discworld fans with open arms and is offering programing, events, exhibits and meets in Terry's honor. www.sasquan.org
We have the con's permission to make this film, and we'll be there throughout the convention asking fans of the books - as well as people who knew and worked with Sir Terry - what they would like the world to remember about this brilliant, funny, and very special man.
We'll film the Discworld exhibit and take note of Discworld art at the convention, as well. We'll record Discworld cosplayers and gamers as they travel the convention. We'll record the best parts of panels, including the Terry Pratchett memorial panel, the Science and Technology of Discworld panels, and the Women of Discworld panel. You'll hear and see all the great stories that result.
Best of all, we'll interview the fans; people from all over the world who love the books, and who partied, chatted and laughed with Terry over the years.
Those who contribute to the making of this film will receive a DVD of this documentary. See notes below.
This film is being made by fans for fans, and is a non-profit effort. We'll post the budget and all expenses online so you can see where your money goes. Any funds left over from the making of this film will go to Terry's approved charities, which include Alzheimer's Research and the Orangutang Foundation.

The 'We Like Them Short' story competition in memory of Sir Terry Pratchett to raise funds for Alzheimers Research UK is now in full swing. The organisers Sorin Suciu and Laura Skillen have whittled down the hundreds of entries to just 19 (of which I am one!) and the pressure is now on to complete the final draft texts by 30 June.
The reason for this e-mail is to ask for your support in allowing monthly updates in your newsletter regarding this initiative with the aim of trying to raise awareness amongst fans.
A blog has been set up where interested parties can follow regular updates from both the co-ordinators and authors involved in the project.
Of course the overall aim is to create a tribute to the great man from fans across Roundworld, with contributions from established prolific novelists to unpublished enthusiasts like myself.

Hi, I released my first novel as an ebook last year, it is now available as a paperback from Amazon. It is a humorous fantasy, greatly influenced by Sir Terry and the cover blurb reads: "The land of Lyonnesse has been concealed from our eyes since ancient times in a bubble of time. Life is simpler. Problems of ethnicity, race, religion, greed and politics have all but been eliminated. But their near utopic existence is shattered when a murder is committed. So when a stranger stumbles accidentally into Lyonnesse, he is the ideal candidate to investigate with complete impartiality. But (there is always a but), unfettered by our preconceptions, Lyonnesse is a place where magic and time travel are a part of everyday life. Difficult enough concepts to grasp at the best of times, but even more so when our young hero has a murder to investigate. Oh, and is desperate to get back home by teatime a week ago to take his girlfriend out for a meal."

6. Review: The Long Utopia - The Long Earth Book 4
Reviewed by Jason Anthony.
The Long Utopia is the fourth book in The Long Earth series. It takes place over several time zones but is mainly set some three decades after the first Long Earth book. The book features series regulars Lobsang, Joshua, Agnes and Sally and starts with Joshua's journey back to Datum Earth on his 50th Birthday.
The Long Earth books are an interesting prospect. They are not exactly the most exciting books I have ever read. They seem to include a whole lot of detail while lacking any real sense of pace or urgency. I tend to love the overall book but find it hard going while reading it - if that makes any sense at all. Though, strangely, I always finish the books wanting more.
For me personally the Long Mars (book 3) was a more enjoyable novel but I still prefer The Long Utopia over The Long War. I've enjoyed finding our more about the new creatures introduced in this novel and I am also enjoying the development of The Next.
The Long Earth books divide opinion. If you enjoyed the other books in the series then The Long Utopia is very much more of the same. If, however, you didn't enjoy The Long Earth then this one probably won't change your mind.
It should be noted that Stephen Baxter's publicist has recently announced that Terry completed his involvement in book five last year and that Stephen Baxter, after his current commitments, will complete book five as some point in the future. So we can definitely expect at least one more journey through the Long Earth.

8. Protecting and Preserving Sir Terry Pratchett's Intellectual Property

Fans may like to know about how we protect the intellectual property in the late Sir Terry Pratchett's name and work. These efforts have been ongoing for some time. Sir Terry's family, the executors of his estate, and his manager Rob Wilkins, have asked us to provide some information about this. They have been touched by the dedication and creativity shown by fans of Sir Terry's work, and there has never been any desire to interfere with non-commercial fan activities.
Commercial activities (for example, but not limited to, t-shirts or similar) do require, and always have required, permission. The same applies to adaptations of Sir Terry's books.
Sir Terry's books are of course protected by copyright. Depending on the circumstances, this can be infringed by using even quite brief quotations without permission. Artwork created by official illustrators, such as Paul Kidby, is similarly protected.
The Terry Pratchett name, as well as the name "Discworld", and the other distinctive names and titles associated with Sir Terry's work, are also protected by trade mark laws around the world. This extends to the use of protected trade marks in relation to merchandise.
Where unauthorised infringing material is identified, we are often able to have it removed via established website takedown procedures. In many cases we also communicate directly with those responsible, and ask for appropriate written assurances.
Commercial rights in Sir Terry's work, outside of publishing rights, have been granted to Narrativia Limited. These have been officially licensed to a number of approved licensees in order to maintain appropriate focus and quality. Requests for permission are considered on a case by case basis but will often have to be declined.
