Welcome to issue 218 and the second edition of August. I've been making some fairly sweeping changes to the Discworld Monthly website over the last few weeks. In the process I have removed the RSS news feed as I don't believe it was being used by many people, and replaced it by embedding the Discworld Monthly Facebook page status updates into the site. We have been using the Facebook page quite extensively to push out news that wouldn't wait until the next issue. Please take a look at the site and let me know of any glaring problems that I might have introduced in my effort to get things done.

Paul Kidby's 'Discworld & Beyond' exhibition opened on Saturday 25th July 2015 at Wardown Park Museum, Luton, LU2 7HA. It features Paul's original painting of 'Check Mort' which was used as Terry's funeral card.

Random House Books Australia have created an Introduction to The Long Earth page on their website.

Random House Books Australia are also producing a tribute video for Terry Pratchett. The site says: "Around the world, fans of Terry Pratchett are coming together to take part in a video tribute dedicated to the legendary Discworld series. In photographing themselves with their most treasured quote from Discworld, people are capturing the delight, humour and fantastic adventure of these beloved books. These photographs will be woven together into a tribute video, to be released on YouTube later this year.
27 August 2015 will mark the end of an era as the final book in the Discworld series, THE SHEPHERD'S CROWN, is published. It is also the final day you can submit your photos for inclusion in the tribute video, organised by Penguin Random House Australia."

Issue 264 of SFX (the British Science Fiction magazine) which was released on Wednesday 22nd July included a free "Terry Pratchett mini mag". The mini mag celebrates Terry's life and also includes some pictures from The Compleat Discworld Atlas which is due to be released in October 2015.

The Turtle Moves: Remembering Terry Pratchett is a new Kick Starter campaign to raise funds to produce a "Love Letter" to Terry Pratchett. The documentary will be filmed at the Sasquan event in August and will feature interviews with fans about how Terry affected their lives.

With graduation under way, The University of Bristol take a look back at some of the world-famous people who have been awarded honorary degrees. Among them are great political leaders, eminent scientists, renowned actors, literary greats, broadcasting legends and cherished chefs.
Of particular interest to us is Sir Terry Pratchett who was awarded his honorary degree in 2004.

Stephen Baxter was interviewed by The Guardian newspaper in an interview entitled: Why Science Fiction is Like Therapy, in which he speaks about The Long Earth series and how he and Terry had planned for a huge cosmic climax in book 5 - to be published at some point in the future.

Stephen Briggs' next Discworld show at the Unicorn Theatre, Abingdon will be 'TERRY PRATCHETT: the Shakespeare Codex'.
Discworld's 'stars' have to stop the elves taking over our world, make Shakespeare write 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' ... and ensure the potato is discovered!
Featuring Ridcully, Rincewind, Granny Weatherwax, Angua, Vetinari, Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I & the Earl of Oxford.
Based loosely on 'The Science of Discworld II: the Globe', 'Lords & Ladies', and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Staged in April 2016 (both Terry's and Shakespeare's birth month).

Celsius 2015, a Spanish Convention which took place this week held a Discworld Cosplay gathering in homage to Terry Pratchett. They achieved the Largest Gathering of Discworld Cosplayers in Spain!

Summer of Penguin have set up a page that includes "deleted scenes" from The Shepherd's Crown, Terry's final Discworld novel due out at the end of August.

The Shepherd's Crown will be released as a Deluxe Collector's Edition on the 5th November 2015.
This luxury gold edition is packaged in a foiled 'honeycomb' slipcase, with each copy numbered and stamped by Rob Wilkins, Terry's close friend, using the 'Order of the Honeybee' insignia.
This limited edition release of only 500 copies sold out within the two hours it took between the news breaking and me writing this piece. Looks like you and me will all be watching eBay for a while.

6. Review: Shaking Hands With Death
Reviewed by Jason Anthony
Shaking hands with Death is basically the transcript of the speech that Terry wrote, and Tony Robinson read, in his Dimbleby Lecture in 2010. The book is a very slim volume of only 60 pages. The transcript was previously published in A Slip Of The Keyboard.
Even though I was at the live recording of the lecture, the book makes the contents of the speech much more personal. I am in awe of Terry's amazing ability to funnel his anger into such a wonderfully written document.
The only new content in this book is the beautiful, funny and poignant introduction by Rob Wilkins which provides insight into the process of writing the speech and setting up and recording the lecture, including the choice of 'stunt Terry'. The final paragraph of the introduction features Rob's words about Terry's final moments. It really made me stop in my tracks and think. I don't mind saying that it brought a tear to my eye.
I still find it wrong to read the official information about Terry which reads: Terry Pratchett was the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series... Surely he still is and always will be the acclaimed creator. His death does not take that away.

Having been kicked out of the Library for raucous behaviour, The Guild Of Drag Artistes and Gender Impersonators hold their annual unofficial Welcome To Wadfest celebration on Friday 21st August at the Guild's mobile marquee headquarters, in the corner of the events field - just look for the very large sign saying Cocktail Party!
As is traditional, Guild Hostess Britney Weatherwax will be hostessing and also as per tradition probably putting her foot in It.
This year our theme stolen from the Library's biography section is "PUTTING ON THE RITZ", a celebration of film stars and starlets, music gods and goddesses and all the usual "Z" list celebrities type.
In our usual topsy-turvy way, it is encouraged that the gents dress as ladies, ladies as gents, and librarians as humans, although this way of approaching it is recommended but not essential. For those who come without a frock or tie, there are normally a few to borrow on the night.
As usual we will be holding the Ms Wadfest competition for the guys and The Prince Wadfest for the girls. This is definitely not a beauty competition, see previous winners for firm evidence of this. The rules for these are made up as the night goes along; in previous years it's not the best costume or the prettiest that necessarily wins, in the true spirit of Wadfest, it's the taking part that counts.
The start time will be 8.30pm approximately, though as in previous years if you want to come earlier, then do.
This will be a lot of fun and a great way for newcomers to Wadfest to get to know others in attendance. And for veterans to have a place to make their excuses for their antics at the last party. Bring your own drinks, a sense of humour and dance the night away!
