It's been a busy month for everyone. The North American Discworld convention happened, The Terry Pratchett: HisWorld exhibition was finally opened to the public, Good Omens is currently being filmed and there has been a wealth of new items for us to review.
In the upcoming days the Irish Discworld Convention will start, we won't be there unfortunately as we will be celebrating our Editor's birthday that weekend by feeding some capybaras and going to see Mort in Twyford. We hope everyone in Ireland raises a glass of Guinness and sings Happy Birthday to Jason in our absence.
A light at the end of the tunnel seems to be very much on the horizon for our friends who are working on a certain "Epic", but we will have more on that in our next issue (fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes crossed it all goes to plan)

Please note: Dishwashers and our mugs are not friends and therefore it's not a good idea to force that issue, you may end with an unhappy mug. You will also have a very unhappy mug if you try to wash it in the tumble drier which is what I originally typed here. On another note, our badges, keyrings and fridge magnets are not friends with the washing machine either, I guess you can work out why [this is from bitter experience - Ed]
2.2 Good Omens TV Series
Eek ! Eek ! Eek! The end of the world is nigh!! Well, it's about 17 months away according to Neil Gaiman (which is Feb 2019 by our calculations!)
Good Omens has started filming!!!!!!
Earlier this month it was revealed that David Tennant and Michael Sheen are playing the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale.

2.3 Convention News
We don't like promoting ourselves too much but we were overly honoured to be asked to contribute to the North American Discworld Convention souvenir programme. Jason and myself wrote individual articles which we hope weren't too rambling!!!!! We'll include our articles in a future issue for your enjoyment / delectation / annoyance (delete as appropriate)
It has been revealed that the next NADWCON will happen in 2019 chaired by the lovely Amy Atha-Nicolls. Hurrah!
Nullus Anxietas VII, the Australian Discworld Convention will be held in Melbourne from 12th to 14th April 2019.

The UK DWCon committee have been hard at work sorting all the room allocations for attendees. As I type this they had sent out another batch of room offers, with several more batches to go. Please appreciate that it's a huge undertaking and relies heavily on attendees responding to their offers rapidly and responsibly.
2.4 Exhibition News
The Terry Pratchett: HisWorld Exhibition opened to the public on Sat 16th Sept. It was a beautiful day weatherwise and was well attended by an eclectic cohort of fans.
Both Paul Kidby and Rob Wilkins were in attendance and the wonderful pairing of Rob Liano and Amy Anderson from the Josh Kirby estate were also glimpsed at the exhibition.
Many fans travelled from all over our roundworld for the opening such as our friend Martin Glauner from Germany and Australian fan Shannan Rodda from Melbourne. It made our trip from South Wales seem a short one (still 4 hours drive though!)
Just a week later Stephen Briggs was there to give an exclusive talk for those lucky enough to get a ticket. We have a full review of the opening day later in this issue.
2.5 Other News
Discworld App News
The Discworld App on Apple devices has ceased working on devices that upgrade to iOS 11. It is also no longer available to buy (it ceased to be available on the 12th September) .
The app team have issued the following statement:
"We recently found out that Apple are withdrawing support for 32-bit apps in their newest operating system, iOS 11 - this means that all 32-bit apps will stop working on devices that upgrade to iOS 11. As it was developed several years ago, the Discworld App is a 32 bit app and falls into that category. We have looked into updating the app in line with Apple's new OS, but the original developers of the app are no longer in business and without them we unfortunately don't have access to the complete assets needed for this kind of update. So we're sad to say that the Discworld App will no longer be available to buy after Apple updates to iOS 11, and will no longer work on devices that update to iOS 11. We apologise to any Discworld fans who will be disappointed by this.
We would like to thank the fans that have downloaded the app for their feedback and hope that you enjoyed the experience."
[NEW: Re-release of BBC Radio Plays] Guards! Guards!
BBC Radio 4 Extra have continued their programme of re-broadcasting previously recorded Pratchett radio plays.
Last week saw Guards! Guards! released again for your listening pleasure. It is six episodes in length and is available on BBC Radio iPlayer.
The start date was the 18th September at 6pm BST and it will be available for until the 18th October on iPlayer.
BBC Radio iPlayer is available to listen to worldwide so that means fans all over the world have the opportunity to hear this wonderful radio play.
3. Book Release News
3.1 English Releases
A Little Blue Book has appeared as a result of the Terry Pratchett: HisWorld exhibition. It was released on the opening day of the exhibition (Saturday 16th September).
The book costs 20GBP and is only available at Salisbury Museum and at Discworld.com.
It has been compiled by Stephen Briggs and has Artwork by Paul Kidby.

We first reported that these were coming out back in April 2016, then the release date got pushed back to April 2017.

Terry Pratchetts Discworld Imaginarium by Paul Kidby has formally been announced.
There will be three versions of this book: a Standard hardback, a Special edition and a Deluxe Special limited edition.
It's being published by Gollancz/Orion.
The release date for the Standard and Special editions is the 23rd November 2017.
There is no official release date for the Deluxe Special lImited edition as yet.
Paul Kidby has collected the very best of his Discworld illustrations in this definitive volume, including 40 pieces never before seen, 30 pieces that have only appeared in foreign editions, limited editions and BCA editions, and 17 book cover illustrations since 2004 that have never been seen without cover text. [UK] Terry Pratchett: HisWorld - a new major Terry Pratchett Exhibition will take place at The Salisbury Museum from 16th Sept 2017 to 13 Jan 2018.
Pictures of various items that will be on display at the exhibition have been appearing on Salisbury Museum's social media feeds. Some items have been made especially for the exhibition. The pratchetthisworld.com website is now full of information and images for your perusal.
The Josh Kirby estate recently announced that the original artwork for Reaper Man will also be on view at the exhibition. It is a rare opportunity to see a Josh Kirby original in the UK as the last time was back in 2007.

I recently signed up to your newsletter and have been wowed by the depth of information it contains and the richness of the Discworld fandom. I hope to make some meager contribution to that fandom with my podcast, Radio Morpork, in which me and my co-host Steve (both longtime Discworld fans) work through the series book-by-book in chronological order. We analyse them, getting deep into the weeds of some pseudo-intellectual mental gymnastics and occasionally retreating to safer territory to just joke and gush about what we love about the books, before closing each episode by ranking each book in an ongoing attempt to build a thoroughly-detailed, passionately-argued but ultimately unabashedly subjective Discworld book pantheon.
I was wondering if you would be so obliging as to feature a mention of our podcast in your next newsletter. Podcasts have enlivened the discussion in other speculative fiction fandom communities (A Song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter, etc.) but as far as I know, we're the only ongoing Discworld re-read podcast, so I think your readers would be very interested to hear about us. 9. My Life with The Broken Drummers

In March 2005, I walked into a pub just off Edgware Road in London looking for a Discworld Meetup group. I spotted a plushy orangutan on one of the tables and headed towards it. I didn't know it then but my life was about to change forever.
I was 21 years old and nervous. I had grown up with dire warnings of the dangers of meeting people online. Also, I had tried a couple of these meets before and the last had one ended with me escorting a drunken American woman to the wrong side of London in a black cab because the driver would not take her alone. Since then I had continued to get updates from Meetup and knew that a regular group was now up and running. I decided to give it another go.
In July 2004, Jack Hanley had also had another bad Meetup experience. He went along to a meet and found that the only other person present was a journalist writing an article on the kind of people that go to Meetups. He decided that someone needed to take control and that person would be him. By the time I started going, the group had been meeting for months. Eventually, Meetup started asking for fees so we decided to dispense with their services. That meant that we needed a name. We settled for The Broken Drummers.
I took over running The Broken Drummers in mid-2006, when Jack stopped coming regularly. By that time its membership had grown substantially due its members "Terryvangelising". We recruited a lot of people we met at events and I increased membership by placing regular adverts in Discworld Monthly. Today Facebook is our biggest source of recruitment.
So, what do we do at Drummers meetings? Mostly, we just chat. Our conversations can be very deep, very silly or both. We have been known to sing Monty Python songs on occasion. Usually, there is a quiz and it is generally on Discworld unless the quizmaster decides otherwise but that is our only bit of official business. What makes Drummers work is that its members share the Pratchett sense of humour and decency.*
I met my husband at The Broken Drummers and have made many good friends over the years. Members vary in age from 20s to people so old they won't say how old they are. There are those who come regularly, others who just come occasionally and tourists who make a one-off visit (although one of these keeps back despite the fact she lives in the USA). Our revered founder Jack still makes the odd appearance and reminds us all that old people today are a disgrace.
The Broken Drummers meets on the first Monday of every month from about 7pm. We meet in the Monkey Puzzle, a traditional pub with a traditional Irish landlord in Sussex Gardens, which is off Edgware Road. Look out for the Monkey Puzzle trees in the beer garden. We sit at the back of the pub (if you consider the beer garden entrance to be the front).
We sometimes hold extra meetings. This year we've had a couple of weekend summer drinks sessions at the Puzzle during the afternoon. This has given people who can't do Monday nights a chance to come along. We also did a Locked in a Room escape game earlier this year. Sadly, my team got killed. I'm always keen to hear suggestions for special meets.

10. Review: Capture the Castle Exhibition

So, what does an art exhibition apparently named after a Dodi Smith book has to do with Discworld? Simply, it has Paul Kidby Discworld artworks in it.
Castles, for anyone living in Wales, are a bit of challenge; we've got lots of them and they bring in a lot of tourism, but they were mostly built to suppress Welsh rebellion in the time of Edward I - the "Ring of Iron". Having Prince Charles crowned as Prince of Wales in one of these, in a made-up ceremony certainly didn't help, and having an English firm recently propose a huge artwork at Flint Castle in the form of a "Ring of Steel" certainly picked that scab recently...but I digress.
The exhibition has a wide range of images, but all are pictorial art; no 3d images or video. Some famous artists are in the mix - JMW Turner being the main one most people have heard of. There are some striking techniques on show - Alan Rankle's two large scale images are particularly fascinating with colours that almost glow - a mix of oils and pigmented inkjet on canvas - reminding me of Terry's description of The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke by Richard Dadd.
A number of the images were made for advertising purposes, particularly rail and road travel in the 1930s.
Another standout for us was Sebastian Pether's Moonlight Scene, Southampton. Aside from the local interest, it's a very strong night time image with very well painted light including a more realistic than most moon reflection, the local castle dominating the left of the frame. Some locals were debating its realism, as they shared the view that the central keep would not have been there by the time the painter came to see it.
Images of interest to fantasy fans have their own section, include Brokedown Palace by Alan Lee, done for a Steven Brust cover, and Helms Deep by Alan Lee, which was an illustration for the centenary edition of Lord of the Rings and used by Peter Jackson as a start point for the design and art direction of the 2002 film (yes, I know it's not a castle - I didn't curate this okay!).
So, what of Paul's images? There are two, both pencil illustrations.
The first is The Tower of Art, for which Paul notes inspiration from one of the Bruegel images, but he's given it a distinctly Discworld organic spin, with the tower spiralling upwards crookedly and not narrowing as much as it should for simple physics; but I'm sure the UU doesn't need that sort of science stuff. The arches and doorways leaning at odd angles gives it an even stronger organic feel.
The second is Lancre Castle. The castle sits as described in the books with a cliff on one side, and a variety of architectural styles showing it's evolved over centuries. The progress of the cliff is also noted - one part fallen away, another looking like only someone with a penchant for emergency parachute drops testing Leonard of Quirm's devices would like to stay there.
Overall, an interesting exhibition if you like visual arts. The gallery has free entry and there is much more to see including some interesting surrealist works alongside more conventional art.
11. Review: Terry Pratchett: HisWorld Exhibition

Discworld Monthly visited the Terry Pratchett: HisWorld Exhibition on its opening day (Saturday 16th September) we arrived at 9:30 ready for the 10am opening. Rob Wilkins - head of all things Pratchett - said a very few words and cut open the ribbon with a rather small pair of scissors. He apparently wanted to use Terry's sword but that was locked away behind glass in the exhibition.
After navigating our way through the entrance hall we came to the start of the exhibition and a very welcoming painting of Terry created by Paul Kidby. The exhibition is the biggest show that the museum have ever hosted and it is spread across several rooms on two floors. Inside you will find such artifacts as the aforementioned sword and one of Terry's early portable word processors. You will also find many pieces of art by Paul Kidby and even a couple of pieces by the wonderful Josh Kirby.
Spaced around the rooms are quotes from Terry - but not the usual ones you often see quoted. I found the one where he talks frankly about having two diseases PCA and the knowledge of having PCA quite emotional.
One of the highlights is the recreation of Terry's office. It's actually an amalgamation of items from his office and its anti-chamber but it gives a wonderful insight into what was the creative centre for so much of Terry's works. I loved the fact that Terry had a cat flap installed into his desk. As if proof was needed that Terry was a cat lover.
There are lots of amazing artifacts spread around the rooms - including some items that Terry was nevel alive to see. There is a script for the Good Omens TV series (behind glass) and his crushed hard drive. There is also the bronzed bust that Paul Kidby created of Terry as well as the clay master that the cast was taken from.
In one of the rooms on the second floor is a writing desk and pens and paper where you can write your memories of Terry. When we got there several notable Discworld "celebrities" had already posted in their messages. We added our own to the growing collection.. You never know - they may one day find themselves printed in a slim tome.
Which reminds me - for those that went to the 2014 Convention and got one of the Green Folios and one of the Black Folios at Terry's memorial you can now add the blue folio to your collection. We review our copy later in this issue and will be giving you the opportunity to win your own in this month's competition.
Back to the exhibition - give yourself two to three hours to really go round and look at everything and then go round again - we assure you there will be things you missed the first time. Don't forget to take some tissues as there seems to be an abundance of the Onion fairy in the building.
It this a full and comprehensive exhibition of Terry's stuff? No not really there is a lot of stuff that didn't make it here - but and this is important - you get a really good feel of what Terry liked to surround himself with. More stuff would start to overwhelm the venue. It's a nice comfortable tribute to a great author and wonderful human being and I loved it.
Terry Pratchett: HisWorld runs until 13th January 2018 at the Salisbury museum, just across the road from Salisbury cathedral and a stone's throw away from the square where Terry's Knight was located before it came back to Terry's home. By the way the Knight is currently located in the recreation of Terry's office.
While visiting don't forget to look around at the other parts of the museum. You may find some Wee Free Men lurking in the other display cabinets!

The Little Blue Book otherwise known as "Terry Pratchett: HisWorld, A Brief Guide to Discworld" can be bought either at the Salisbury Museum or embossed from the lovely people over at Discworld.com at the sum of 20 GBP.
The book is identical in size and feel to the previous two little books - The MMXIV Green Folio and The Little Black Book (Memorial Folio). It also has the silhouette of Terry on the front, this time in gold. Like those before it, it is a limited edition.
What can I tell you about it? Well it is the first time we've seen the words "(c) Dunmanifestin Ltd 2017" in a Discworld publication instead of "(c)Terry and Lyn Pratchett." which made me a bit sad.
It was a reminder of the fact he is gone and that this book was something not written by him.
It was, in fact, written by Stephen Briggs and has illustrations by Paul Kidby.
It contains an introduction by the curator Richard Henry about how the exhibition came about followed by a small bit about Terry, but the main bulk of the book contains synopses of some of the main characters that we find on the Disc, and a small amount about the Disc itself. Each of these are accompanied by a glorious pencil drawing by Paul. The synopses provide a small insight into each character, which most seasoned readers may already know about.
It is a book for the completist, the collector who has to (to coin a phrase) "Have them all!"
At 20 GBP it's not a cheap book by any means but alongside its brothers, it sits well on the shelf.
I got mine signed on the opening day of the exhibition by both Rob Wilkins and Paul Kidby.
I loved what Rob wrote in mine "P.S. Discworld Monthly is the best! But may contain Nuts!" [He knows us so well - Ed]

13. Review: The Librarian from The Discworld Emporium

Sometimes we get sent stuff in the post for review purposes. This month an awesome parcel addressed to the "Daft Sods" arrived here from the Discworld Emporium and what a parcel it is.
It contained the latest of their sculptures, the Librarian. It is a piece that we had seen developed from a 3d render right up to prototype and now finally, the finished article.
What can I say about this beautiful bit of art by the wonderfully talented Rich Kingston?
I really don't know where to start. [Insert a time scale of two days to get going on this article again, most of it spent staring at the Librarian]
When you open the box , what you find inside is a surprising heavy for it's size Librarian in the sitting position reading a book using a banana skin as a bookmark.
The colouration of this piece is a copper colour with the green aging effect on the cover on the book. He is palm sized , which to everyone else means he sits nicely in the palm of my girlie(ish for an orc) hand. And I just want to smooth him.
The detailing in this palm sized piece of perfection is mind blowing. You can see every line around the eyes of the Librarian's face, so much so that you can almost see what he is thinking. The banana he holds in his foot is as exquisite as the toes that hold it. The fur looks like it should be furry yet is cold and hard to the touch. The book is something I want to read, buy it's language is one this pigeon french speaker cannot decypher. I bet it says something like "Ian likes mince pies" or "Reb is the 9th wonder of the world"
What Rich and the daft sods at the Emporium have done with this is jaw dropping, it really is. I thought I loved the Great A'tuin they did last year but no where near as much as I have fallen in love with this little guy.
Every home should have one guarding their books. Period. Full Stop.

14. Review: Nadwcon 2017 - Witches Brew and a Convention Too
It's official. Discworld fans are wonderful no matter where in the world you find them. I've been to my first ever North American Discworld Convention.
They held it in New Orleans and the theme was all about Genua, Witches and Fat Lunchtime (Discworld Mardi Gras).
I've had the pleasure of attending quite a few cons in the UK and Ireland but never further afield. From the first moment I felt welcomed and at home with committee, Gophers and fellow attendees all enthusiastic and friendly.
The programme was packed full of interesting items, the decorations and room theming were great. Personal highlights were the Lodge meeting (a secret society, you'll have to go to IDWCon or DWCon to find out more), the Night Watch training session and the Witch Trials. They had their own Con Cocktail which was green and sweet and lovely (Witches Brew).
News that has stuck with me from the Con (though there may be more I'm forgetting) - the Josh Kirby estate sent original of 'Reaper Man' to join the Paul Kidby artwork at the Terry Pratchett: HisWorld exhibition of Terry's life (Salisbury Museum). Rob let us know Good Omens filming would start imminently and it since has. And there will be another NADWCon in 2019, chaired by Amy (aka The Incredible Amy) who some of you may remember from previous DW and IDW Cons and Hogswatches past.
With IDWCon only around the corner, I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of my Discworld family again much sooner than normal.
