Welcome to the 250th Issue of Discworld Monthly!
To celebrate this milestone issue we opened a couple of cans of L-space voyager (from the wonderful guys at Ales By Mail and decided to have a bit of a spring clean and shuffle of the newsletter to mark the occasion.
In 2018 we are also celebrating another milestone, 21 Years of Discworld Monthly. We would love to hear from some of you who received issue 1 way back in April 1997 with your views on how the newsletter has changed over the years or even just a favourite highlight from 21 years of issues.
Do check out the stage productions section as there are several additions this issue, some of which happen this February. So go along, support your local production and write us a review telling us what you thought of their performance.
And if you fancy being in a production and live near Poole in Dorset UK, there will be auditions for parts in Jingo shortly. . Look in the Audition News section for where and when.
One last minute bit of event news. The Victorian Discworld Klatch is holding a Clickies night on the 23rd Feb. Look in the Conventions and Other Events section for more details.

2.1 250 issues and still going strong!
Here we are, writing the 250th issue of Discworld Monthly.
Wow, that is all I have to say. Jason keeps telling me that he never expected to make more than three issues before giving up. Yet, somehow we are still here almost 21 years later still producing a monthly newsletter. We are also proud to have have huge followings on our social media channels.
When the first issue of Discworld Monthly was published on the 30th April 1997, Terry had just finished writing Jingo and was working on The Last Continent so whilst we haven't been here since the very beginning, we have been around to see many of the novels appear on our shelves.
As Rachel quite rightly pointed out above I never really expected to get past issue 3 of the newsletter but somehow the love of Terry's writing and especially Discworld has kept us busy for over two decades. Terry's influence on me, Rachel and every one of his fans has been huge and while he sadly isn't with us any more (Can you believe it's been nearly three years?) the ripples he created are still very apparent. 2.2 Good Omens TV Series
Good Omens is just a few weeks off wrapping up filming.It will then go into the long slog of post production before hitting your screens early in 2019.
It seems such a long time ago when we were first told that a TV series of Good Omens was finally going to happen, but in reality it was only 2 years ago at Terry's memorial in 2016 at The Barbican.

We have seen so many images come out from the filming over the last few months via Neil Gaiman's twitter feed, and from what we have seen, it looks amazing. We really can't wait until 2019 to see the end result!

2.3 Terry Pratchett: HisWorld Exhibition
Terry Pratchett His world has now closed its doors at Salisbury Museum for good. For the five months it was open over 20,000 people walked through those doors to be greeted at the entrance by the amazing image of Professor Pratchett.
Something that kept getting asked all over social media and at the exhibition itself was "Will it be going on tour?" "Please let it go on Tour!"
Rob Wilkins decided to answer the thousands of fans asking just this via Twitter a couple of days after the exhibition closed.

2.4 Pub of the Year
The Broken Drum (yes you read that right) has been named Pub of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Beers in the Wood (SPBW).
The Broken Drum located in 308 Westwood Lane, Blackfen, London DA15 9PT opened for business back in April 2005 and is a micropub. Owner Andy Wheeler took the name from The Broken Drum in Ankh Morpork.
A number of pubs were visited by the Judges and they were impressed with the quality and selection of beers, friendly service and the community that is present in The Broken Drum.
For those who are not familiar with the concept of micropubs, a micropub is a small freehouse which listens to its customers, mainly serves cask ales, promotes conversation, shuns all forms of electronic entertainment and dabbles in traditional pub snacks.
Mr Wheeler said: "With the number of micropubs in London rapidly growing, winning this award, along with the awards we already have from the Campaign for Real Ale, is a huge compliment. I am honoured."
For fans of micropubs, The Broken Drum is the opening stop on a micropub crawl in London.
Starting at the award-winning public house, those wishing to take on the challenge can board a 132 bus to The Long Pond in Westmount Road. From there a B16 bus will take you to The Door Hinge in Welling High Street before a 96 to Crayford takes you to the final stop at The Penny Farthing in Waterside.

2.6 Charity Auction News
[Charity Auction News] Discworld Convention 2018 - Chesford Grange UK
During each Discworld Convention there is a Charity Auction, both to raise money for the charities they are supporting, and to give their members a chance to find some special Discworld-related items!
In the past, they have auctioned off everything from props from the television adaptations, to home-made knitted dolls of famous Discworld figures. All proceeds raised from the auction are split between the Convention's chosen charities.
How to donate an item
If you have something you'd like to donate to the charity auction, please email the auction team at auction@dwcon.org with full details and a photograph of your item.
The closing date for registration is 20th April 2018. This is to allow the auction team time to produce a catalogue for all you prospective buyers out there.
What happens next?
The auction team will make a decision about your item and if it is accepted they will send you an email with instructions for getting your item to the auction.
The auction will have approximately 60 lots. The team require all items to be pre-registered so they may keep the auction varied with items for every pocket. Unfortunately, this does mean that they may have to turn down some offered items.

4. HisWorld Exhibition - A Virtual tour

Where do I start? I think I shall give you an imaginary tour.
Salisbury Museum is situated next to Salisbury cathedral in The King's House. One of the oldest buildings in Salisbury, the King's House started in the 13th century as the Prebendal* residence of the Abbot of Sherborne. The house gained its royal appellation after Sadler played host to King James I here. It was heavily remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries to achieve its rather curious style of medieval and Jacobean mixed together. In 1852 it became a teacher training college, in which role it is mentioned in Thomas Hardy's novel 'Jude the Obscure'.
It would have not looked out of place buried in the streets of Ankh Morpork, but it did mean the building was not designed to be a museum so it is full of smaller rooms with high ceilings.
You enter through an arched porchway into a corridor which leads to the "little shop" and here, the adventure begins.
Whilst stood waiting to get into the exhibition, behind you is a donations box with a rather special Feegle inside. The feegle was sculpted by Paul Kidby in 2017 and 25 of them were cast for sale at the sum of 3,250GBP each. This one is painted and he holds his hands out to catch the coins as they are dropped in the box. His name? Rob Anybody.
In the little shop is a variety of Discworld Merchandise, most was available for sale on Discworld.com or PaulKidby.com. It's nice to see them in the flesh. The special items here were the Little Blue Folios and the HisWorld merchandise, which included a pin badge and a mug with the exhibition logo on.
So as we start to head into the exhibition itself we stop and look through the glass door at a very large Professor Pratchett. This is the Professor Pratchett from the posters for the Exhibition and the cover of the Discworld Imaginarium. As we go through the doors, there are two portraits of Terry which were painted by Josh Kirby in 1993 for the 10th anniversary of the Discworld. Both have Terry's face made up of characters from his books. One has him smiling, the other has Terry looking quite annoyed.
This first room is filled with items and artwork from Terry's early years as a writer. The centre of the room has a glass case containing such wonders as Terry's Imperial 58 Typewriter that he bought with the 14 GBP he made from having The Hades Business published and the Gold Bee and Gold Grasshopper that he cast with the help of London Zoo, NHM and the Bee Research Association. The case also contained two 3D resin casts, one of the Carpet People book and one of The Colour of Magic. These had been sculpted as presents for Terry by none other than the cunning artificer Bernard Pearson. On the shelf below them was one of the 8 or 9 hand coloured 1st editions of The Carpet People. These had been hand coloured by Terry. It was wonderful to see Terry's own illustrations in the colours he intended for them. Around the room was much more of Terry's artwork for The Carpet People including the original sketches as well as one of the book launch folders for The Carpet People at Heals in Tottenham Court Road. It was also a rare chance to see the original artworks for Strata and the paperback of The Dark side of the Sun by Tim White, artwork for the hardback of The Dark Side of the Sun by Terry himself and The Colour of Magic by Alan Smith. The remaining two walls in this room had words from Terry himself about how it all began with varying quotes emblazoned across them.
In the corner of the room, was a familiar noise. A typewriter (not quite as old as Terry's) was on a desk with a ream of paper for those who had the inclination to type something. It was a reminder that once, all writers had to type their manuscripts. The wall beside it had a large pencil drawn image of Hex.
On one of the walls above a glass case were the words "So much universe, and so little time", beneath it was a montage of images of Terry, ranging from early school photos to Terry receiving his OBE. A lifetime of images of the great man himself. The case below it contained some of his most treasured items such as the letter Terry received from J R R Tolkien among them.
In the second room, we were met with a mannequin wearing Terry's hat, leather jacket, bag and that infamous T-shirt "Tolkien's Dead, JK Rowling said no, Philip Pullman couldn't make it, Hi. I'm Terry Pratchett." Propped against it was Terry's walking stick with a silver death head on the top. This stopped us dead in our tracks. It was odd seeing a faceless Terry stood before us. It felt like we were in a Doctor Who episode with the Autons. (Could you have imagined it if Terry had written an episode? It would have been amazing.) The last time we had seen that shirt, Terry was wearing it. A firm reminder that he is gone from this trouser leg of time. In the same glass cabinet was his sword, the one he made from Thunderbolt Iron and what strikes most people was how plain and simple it is. It is a short stabby sword rather than a long cutting sword. [In another life it would probably be quite useful for actually cutting people - Ed]. Among other things in this cabinet was a silver plated Death on Binky, given as a gift to Terry to celebrate 10 years of the Discworld from his publishers, a cast of a Psephophorus terrypratchetti vertebrae (sea turtle 40 million years old), a Toby Jug of Terry and a tiny Olivetti Quaderno laptop (that Terry used to write some of his novels).
On the wall behind us (as we look at the faceless Terry) was the original artwork for Reaper Man by Josh Kirby. It's amazing to see how bright the the colours are. Below it were several of Josh's sketches which were produced for Eric. It was nice to see the work in progress drawings from the late Josh, an insight we would not have seen otherwise.
The main attraction here is a peek into the office of Terry Pratchett. His desk with it's six screens and the wall full of books and paraphernalia behind it was what most people had come to see. The window had Paul Kidby's version of The Chalk painted upon it and the window sill had some crocheted characters, a typewriter and an hourglass. The Baron Knight stood guarding the room in the corner. The Venerable Order of the Honey Bee Luggage sat by the fireplace next to the pensive hare and the walls had Death, Tiffany Aching, The Wee Free Men and the Elephant rising hung upon them.
The screens were showing Doom, wikipedia, Meatloaf's Bat out of hell playing in Windows Media Player and Night Watch being written. As we stand and watch several emails pop up on one of the screens from various people such as: Rob Wilkins, Sandra Kidby, Bernard Pearson and Neil Gaiman. (We won't mention the infiltration of the typus typodia in the spelling of bestseller). The desk has a toy rat underneath it, a relic from the days when the cat slept in its underbelly. The noise of the keyboard mixed with the meowing of a ghost cat and birds singing added to the eeriness of the empty room. For the final few days of the exhibition Terry's directorial chair from the set of Good Omens was in place at the desk too.
As we walk away from Terry's Office, to the side of it, is the original of Discworld Massif and an interactive screen to allow you to find out more about the characters in the painting. Above the screen, the Great A'tuin and Science of the Discworld artwork was to be seen. The other side had a board full of photos of Terry in his office. The headline on it being "In 1993, we moved to a Domesday Manorette near Salisbury where I seem to be accumulating offices". [I stood and stared at the photos of Terry and the Massif for some time - thinking about Terry and the fact that all his wonderful characters are now frozen in time - Ed]
Before leaving the room, we had a look at three of Paul Kidby's artworks adorning the back wall of the room. The Amazing Maurice, The Band with Rocks in (a parody of Sgt peppers Lonely Heart Club Band) and the Dree your Weird. The cases below them had items from Terry's time in a gang show, his Blackboard monitor blackboard eraser, his Knighthood medal, his coat of arms, his Blue Peter Badge and the Carnegie Medal that he won for the Amazing Maurice.
And then we walked out the door and up the stairs. Here we find the cosplay wall where everyone had an opportunity to take a selfies dressed as their favourite character. The options here were limited to feegles, Tiffany, Rincewind and Moist. The very clever costumes were designed to be climbed into from the back by a local seamstress and were hung on special book hooks designed by Bernard Pearson and his team at the Emporium.
The next room contained the wall of memories, a place where you could post your memories of Terry in a specially designed postbox that would growl at you as you posted your thoughts. The wall had memories from Neil Gaiman, Rhianna Pratchett, Stephen Briggs, Bernard Pearson, Colin Smythe and others. It was worth stopping and reading them all.
The walls here were adorned with various Paul Kidby artwork, I could list them all, but I am sure if you get hold of a copies of the Imaginarium and the Charmed Realm you can imagine what was here. From Moist on the front of a train, to the map of Lancre to the most beautiful fairies and mermaids that have come from the brush of Mr Kidby, it was a wonderful breather from all the emotional memories on the memory wall.
Back downstairs, we head down the corridor with one wall featuring a large Rincewind printed upon it with information about the character and details about how a certain cunning artificer came to make the characters in "take home" form. There were original sketches by Terry for how he wanted Rincewind and Granny to look and below it, a Clarecraft Rincewind to show how they looked when finished. The opposite wall had more Kidby artwork hung upon it. Some of these were Death paintings such as Death on a Motorbike. This hallway lead us all to the end rooms.
Upon entering this room, we are greeted by a dark wall with cracks painted on it and the words "I'm slipping away a bit at a time and all I can do is watch it happen". It has the Check Mort painting hung upon it and details how Terry felt about how PCA and Alzheimer's was affecting him. To the right were sketches that Terry had drawn when he was in his prime, accompanied by drawings showing how badly his PCA had affected his spacial awareness. [It was a brutally honest and painful reminder of how PCA robbed Terry of so much - Ed]
Around this room were a couple of other artworks. Discworld Family Values showing the Death family was one, the Four Horsemen was the other. This room had a sombre feel to it unlike the rest of the exhibition but it was an important part of Terry's life and deserved to be explored here.
The final room contained a wall filled with words by Rob Wilkins about the last time they wrote together on the 5th December. I won't write what it says here. It's one where the image speaks a thousand more words than I could ever type. I'll let you look at the picture.
The case here held things that came after Terry's death. The destroyed hard drive that contains the unfinished works, the memorial folio and a shepherds crown.
The future was represented with a Good Omens script signed by the cast and crew, the name cards from the first read through of Good Omens and a "Venerable Order of the Honey bee" pin (an order formed, at Terry's request) to protect his legacy.
The rest of the room is filled with many of Paul Kidby's more recent artwork. The sculpted bronze bust of Terry and its wax form from which the bronze was cast drew the eye in a room full of Tiffany Aching paintings (from the various gift edition books) and The Silver Horde dominating the end of the room. The Mona Ogg was found here next to a piece of concept art for a future Terry Pratchett Sculpture in Salisbury.
The original The Imaginarium of Professor Pratchett stares at us with that wicked grin as we look up and see the word "Mind How You Go" over the exit of the exhibition.
This was not the end though. As we wandered through the corridors towards the "normal" side of the museum, we stumble across the Lego Mural of The Amazing Maurice which was enormous and designed exceedingly well because close up it looks all blocky but step just a few feet away and the blocks all merge to make the artwork we know and love.
I know too many who left the exhibition in tears, I hope I gave those of you who couldn't make it a mental map of how the whole thing was.

A big Thank You needs to be said to Richard Henry who received an a honorary Honey Bee at the close of the exhibition from Rob Wilkins. Richard was instrumental in making HisWorld happen and I am sure it won't be the last time we see him around.
A massive thank you also to all the volunteers and staff at Salisbury Museum. They made everyone feel so welcome from the second they walked in the door. [One or two of the lovely volunteers were genuinely upset that it was the last day of the exhibition - Ed]

5. Review of Maskerade at The Progress Theatre Reading

"Maskerade" at the Progress Theatre, Reading is an extraordinary stage adaptation of Sir Terry Pratchett's novel that even those unfamiliar with the story can undoubtedly enjoy.
Nearly 3 hours long but so dynamic that time flies as the simple stage scenery is continuously re-adapted to match the action: the audience is taken seamlessly from the Lancre countryside to
Ankh-Morpork's Opera House with its galleries, dressing rooms and secret passages.
The script too is fabulous, the humours and witty prose of Sir Terry Pratchett masterfully maintained in the dialogues on stage.
As for performance, it was outstanding. Melanie Sherwood delivers an exceptional Granny Weatherwax and Liz Carroll's Nanny Ogg was everything I've always imagined the character to be as I was reading the novels.
I thought I'd see an amateur but well-meaning production but ended up with a wonderful script masterfully staged and an amazing cast to act it out perfectly.
A truly fantastic experience I'll treasure forever.

I've been getting DWM for several years and enjoy every issue. But this is the first time I've written.

First a note on your comment about the recent Mastermind questions on Terry Pratchett novels. I am only a regular reader, getting through the books every few years or so, and only managed to get five answers right. I usually manage only one or two answers correct through all four of the specialised sections, and mentioned to my wife that I thought the questions far simpler than the usual standard. Obviously the setters don't follow your newsletters!
Now I'd like to ask about the Annotated Pratchett File, if anyone can help. As far as I can see, the work stops just before Going Postal. Has any work been done on the later books?
I was looking for a reference to something I need to refresh my memory on. I'm sure that in one of the books Terry mentions a 'mythology' encyclopedia named after a bird, and I was trying to find out if this was a reference to @Bullfinch's Mythology ' that was published in the 19th century, and whether Terry may have gained many of his ideas from there. I've been re-reading the books, but haven't come across the reference again (yet).
