The very first piece of casting news was released this week.

Carrot Ironfoundersson is going to be played by Adam Hugill in the BBC America/Studios series.

Adam is a relatively new face in the world of acting having only been seen in the pilot of Pennyworth but will soon be seen in 1917, World on Fire, The Banishing and How to Stop a Reccuring Dream.

It won't be too long until we find out who the actors playing all the main characters will be. We are most excited to hear who will be playing Vimes !

2.4 From Auditors to Zombies: Exploring Diversity and Inclusion in Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld

Date: Saturday 26 October: 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: Anglia Ruskin University, East Road, CB1 1PT

From Fourex to Klatch and Llamedos to Genua there's a swilling miscellany of gender, race, culture, species, dead and undead. From Dwarfs and their 'Campaign for Equal Heights' to Reg Shoe's 'Fresh Start Club' for Zombies, the Discworld novels observe evolving notions of the acceptance (or not) of 'other'. Keenly unpicking the complexities of inclusion, the venerated Sir Terry Pratchett provides an implicit challenge to the ways in which we think about the delicate value of difference.

Join Dr Terri Simpkin for a Pratchett quote-packed discussion about diversity, inclusion and Discworld.

Tickets are free and bookings will open at 11am on Monday 23 September 2019

4. Review: Men at Arms - Cardiff

We arrived at the Gate Theatre in Cardiff on a very warm Summer's eve after meeting up with friends for a meal before hand. The venue was already warm and didn't bode well based on our previous experiences in this particular theatre.

Men at Arms is Peculiar Productions second Pratchett play but most of the cast are veterans of a previous troupe that performed several Pratchett plays in the past.

The productions we have seen at the Gate theatre have always been of a very good quality so our expectations were high.

The play started with various members of the fools guild playing around in the stage area before Dr Whiteface made his presence felt. He made it clear that our mobile phones / cameras etc were not needed and should be turned off and put away.

In all the years that I've been visiting Pratchett plays I've never seen Men at Arms before so wasn't sure what to expect. It turns out that as this was one of the earliest plays to be adapted Stephen Briggs experimented with playing with footnotes. This involves a bell being rung - and all performances stopping while the footnote is read out. While this seems like a good idea it really stops all flow in the production. There is one point in the play where the footnote is interrupted by a second footnote (it all gets a bit meta) . The second half of the play uses footnotes less and is all the better for it.

I have to say there wasn't a single bad performance. The cast were all really excellent but two people stood out. James Paine as Cpl Carrot has just the right balance of naivety, charisma and looks to make an amazing Carrot. The ladies in the audience said that he also had a fit body but I'll not comment on that. The second was as always Jes Hynes as Captain Vimes. We've seen Jes perform Vimes several times and love his mannerisms and his charisma. For us he is our ultimate Vimes. Sadly this will be Jes' last run with Peculiar Productions has his is going off to start a new, paid, acting career. We wish Jes all the best and hope he remembers his friends when he is a big movie star.

If I had to niggle at all, apart from the oven-like temperature in the room, it was the time it took to swap scenes. I think some of the sets were really clever but when it takes more than a minute to change between scenes it can slow the whole process down and break the flow. It's a minor quibble on an otherwise amazing production.

We really enjoyed our visit to Men and Arms and look forward to returning next year for Peculiar Productions performance on The Fifth Elephant in 2020.

5. Review: Good Omen's Radio Play - On Vinyl

This item is the most exciting purchase I have made all year. I really mean that. From the moment we knew it was being produced, I was prepared to sell my right arm for one.

For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, Dirk Maggs produced a Radio Adaptation of the book Good Omens with Peter Serafinonwicz and Mark Heap which was broadcast on BBC Radio Four and subsequently released on CD ..twice…

This particular edition is on 4 vinyl discs in an amazing looking book and came in a very pricey 99GBP.

Why I am still squealing in delight every time I touch it?

Sometimes the packaging is better than the product. Whilst we all know the Good Omens radio dramatisation was amazing, the packing of it in this vinyl form is out of this world.

The large format book has a gorgeous matte finish to its sturdy solid covers. The cover artwork is a fresh reimagining of Aziraphale and Crowley and could easily be mistaken for a new version of the actual book. From the gold embossing to the appearance of brush strokes, everything screams quality before you've even taken the cellophane off.

The Inlay card is a reproduction of the cover without the shiny bits but has a genuine shiny signature by author Neil Gaiman. Give us a few more weeks and that will be framed and on a piece of wall that isn't already covered in artwork.

The front end papers display more glorious artwork in the form of black and white feathers and the internal cover page displays a different cover in the same art style as the cover of this book.

This book isn't just a method of holding the vinyl, it has actual content too.

Upon opening the pages, we find a full page photograph of Neil Gaiman with a full page of writing from Neil all about the summer of 2014 when they recorded his and Terry's cameo in the dramatisation.

We then go further into the book to see some delightful artwork, two police helmets with Terry and Neil's names on, Crowley as a serpent with an apple, the flaming sword, all with accompanying quotes.

Then we get to words written by Dirk Maggs.

He starts with the words from Neil that he received in an email saying how they should record the cameo with Terry soon "...he may find it harder to process information soon…." and continues with how he came to dramatise the book, cast it and he ends it with his trip to The Chapel to record the cameo itself. So much love for the book and for Terry comes across in Dirks words and it drew a tear as I was reading it.

The next couple of pages contain photos of the production, the last being one of Dirk with Terry and Neil outside The Chapel.

Then there is more of the splendid artwork which gives us more things to ooo and ahhh at.

Then we get the full cast and crew listing and I can finally credit the amazing layout and artwork to the right people. Tom Fournier is the illustrator and Oink Creative did the layout of this beautiful book.

Who needs the vinyl? I joke of course. 4 Heavyweight 12 inch discs contain the dramatisation. The discs are a wonder to look at split as half white, half black in colour with a beautiful centre artwork on the sticker. Disc one only has one side as the other side has the baby antichrist etched on it (which is glorious btw) . All the discs come in separate cardboard sleeves all resplendent with individual artwork.

In the back of the book is a set of 15 Tarot style cards. These were designed by Dan Anscombe. Tattoo fans everywhere will want these on their bodies.

All credit to Tom for the amazing amount of Good Omens artwork in this package. So many pieces of it I want to frame and put on my walls.

My only complaint is that they should have packaged the whole thing with every bit of artwork as separate prints for the wall. It would look spectacular framed up!

We haven't listened to the vinyl as yet. whilst we are a record player household with a huge collection of vinyl, these are just too precious for me to put on the turntable just yet. After all, I have heard the content before.

Am I still squealing in delight at this exquisite package? YES YES YES

It's not often I get excited by something but if you have the money, go and buy a copy.

The standard version (without the signed inlay) is still available on Amazon.

GO AND BUY IT !

While I understand the use of links to Amazon UK & US for purchasing the DVD/Blu-ray releases, books, etc., they are a pain for those of us in the Antipodes.

Amazon.co.uk will not sell into Australia because our government wanted them to charge and remit GST (our VAT equivalent) , and the prices for items from Amazon.com sold via Amazon.au are prohibitive, particularly with our current exchange rate.

I doubt you have any alternative retailer options, but should any arise, please do give them serious consideration, especially if they will sell VAT-free, which really helps cover the additional P&P.

Meanwhile, thank you for the excellent work that goes into the newsletter

Jason replies: If anyone knows of a decent Austrailian book sites that we can link to for our antipodean subscribers please let us know.

Ref. the letter from Keiran Green re the proposed TAMAHER film: I couldn't agree more.

I reckon the opposite of the verb "to dignify" is "to Disnefy." It happens much too often.

Those producers of programmes who think that stuff for kids must always be reduced to the lowest possible common denominator should really read the comments of the late and (very much lamented) Diana Wynne Jones on the subject.

To paraphrase: if you can watch "Doctor Who" - and follow the plot! - while simultaneously arguing with your sister, doing your homework, and eating your tea, then you ought not to be talked down to by anybody. Or visual equivalent!

Incidentally, I know DWJ and Neil Gaiman were mutual fans, but I never saw any reference to her work by Pterry. I'd expect mutual respect - but has anyone got (e.g.) notes of old magazine interviews which could elucidate the matter?

Regards, Bri Derbyshire, Ripon

The developers of Good Omens the musical (Jim Hare, Jay James-Moody & Vicki Larnach) put on a development showing at the beginning of May at the Merrigong Theatre in Wollongong, New South Wales. They had 3 shows and a gang of us Discworld fans from Sydney went to the last show on the Saturday night.

It was brilliant. The performance was fantastic. They made very clever use of limited stage furniture - mainly chairs and a stepladder on wheels. Two chairs on wheels in a dark stage and you have Crowley and Aziraphale in the Bentley driving to Tadfield.

And there are some catchy tunes in there. The best of which is probably "All Living Things", sung as Crowley and Aziraphale try to influence the young Warlock.

They filmed the performance, so there is a chance it may be shown one day.

UK Book Releases

The Ankh-Morpork Archives Vol 1. Release date : 14th November 2019

The Ankh Morpork Archives got announced last month with a release date of 14th November 2019. R.R.P. is 25GBP and it will be published by Gollancz.

The publisher's blurb ..

"Think you know Ankh-Morpork? Think again.

In this top-secret guide, travellers will receive a first-hand experience of the real city. If you've ever wondered where Unseen University students wet their whistles (while managing to avoid their teachers doing the same) , or just what the Assassins' Guild constitutes a proper means of inhumation - there are standards to be upheld, after all - then this is the book for you.

That's right, have yourselves a peek into the inner workings of city's societies. Cut the chaff, glimpse behind the curtain, see how the sausage gets made . . . err, you get the idea.

Just don't let the Thieves' Guild catch you with this book. They won't appreciate their methods being flogged behind their back. Flogging's their job.

Completely revamped and redesigned, this full-colour book contains material from Discworld Diaries across the decades"

We know it has some additional bits written by Stephen Briggs and better quality images by Paul Kidby.

15.9 The Final Word...

*Rachel here*

We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though. We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.

GNU Terry Pratchett...
