Welcome to issue 272 of Discworld Monthly - firstly an apology for the tardiness of this issue - we've been extremely busy at various Comic and anime conventions spreading the word about Discworld. It's always fun to hear the shout of "Oi, Rincewind" when you walk into a room. We've had lots of fun chatting with other Discworld fans that we wouldn't have otherwise met in person. - Oh, and we've also been playing on rollercoasters (again)
We are really looking forward to getting our copy of The Cosplay Journal at the end of October. Part of issue 4 will feature a photoshoot we were part of back on a glorious day in August. We've included a couple of shots later in this issue to give you an idea of how great they look.
We'll be heading down to Bristol on Sunday 20th October for the Bristol Comic Con and Gaming Festival ... if you see us, come over and have a chat.

2.1 The Watch News
The main cast for The Watch series was announced a couple of weeks ago.
Richard Dormer is Sam Vimes

Lara Rossi is Lady Sybil
Sam Adewunmi is Carcer Dunn
Also joining the cast are Adam Hugill (1917) , (Don't Forget The Driver) , Marama Corlette (Blood Drive) and Lara Rossi (Crossing Lines) together with Sam Adewunmi (The Last Tree) .
Filming started in South Africa on 30th September.
The series will consist of 7A episodes of 45 minutes each and is produced by BBC Studios and Narrativia for BBC AMERICA.
It has been written by Simon Allen, and is executive produced by Hilary Salmon , Ben Donald for BBC Studios and Rob Wilkins for Narrativia. Richard Stokes also joins the team as executive producer.
The Watch is a uniquely anarchic, and thrillingly entertaining procedural police drama inspired by the legendary 'City Watch' subset of "Discworld" novels. This disruptive, character-driven thriller centres on Terry Pratchett's misfit cops as they fight to save a ramshackle city of normalized wrongness from both the past and future in a perilous quest.
Make of the above what you will. We will watch it when it comes out and hopefully it will draw people to the thing we love most, the books!
↑≡2.1.1 The Watch Merchandise News
BBC Studios has announced that it will retain all licensing rights to The Watch. Representation of the series includes all licensing rights across merchandise, gaming, publishing, and live events.
Rikesh Desai, Licensing Director, Consumer Products, said: "The Watch is an exciting addition to our slate and one we're proud to be representing. We're looking forward to the series launching next year and to working with partners across the merchandise, gaming, publishing and live events industry."
Rob Wilkins, Executive Producer and Narrativia MD, said "By collaborating with BBC Studios' partners, we'll be able to offer fans and audiences new ways to engage with a world from Terry's imagination. The prospect of expanding the reach of The Watch in this way is a very exciting one, and I look forward to working with new partners that come on board. "
The Watch is currently in development and is due to launch in 2020.

Rachel says….
Of course the above means we'll be looking out for Tv tie-in books like "The Watch TV Companion", "A Guide to the Law and Ordinances of Ankh Morpork" and maybe a video game or a new board game based on the series. Maybe some The Watch cosplay pieces could be appearing in places such as Forbidden Planet/Merchoid or some keyrings/pens/stationery/mugs/water bottles etc. The Live Events section means we may get some more pop up events like the A.Z.Fell bookshop with its escape room.
We are speculating though as we know NOTHING! I know I hate admitting it, but we actually know nothing of what merchandise etc is planned to come out from The Watch. So we will be watching with great anticipation as to what appears.
↑≡2.2 Troll Bridge - The Final Chapter

Troll Bridge's epic journey is almost at an end.
In just a couple of weeks, DVD's and Blu-Rays will head out to thousands of people who backed the film.
Discworld Monthly were one of the first to back the film, and we spread the word as best we could to as many fans as possible.
On Kickstarter, there was a pledge level known as The Jason Anthony Discworld Monthly Reward which, for the princely sum of 4USD gave you a button badge of either Cohen, Mica or the Horse.
Jason's logic which inspired this was that is everyone gave the price of a pint, Snowgum would get enough cash really quickly. 80 of you on Kickstarter decided that was a good idea with many more backing the film at the higher pledge levels.
We spread the word via our newsletter, we hugged Daniel when he showed up at conventions and we dealt with the questions from fans online. We even helped organise the European Premiere because we wanted to give Daniel, Christian, Anna, Don, Andrew and the UK fanbase an event to remember.
Snowgum Films did all the hard work though, seventeen years of starts and stops, reshoots, starting all over again, editing, editing again, more animation, learning stuff they didn't know they had to learn and finally they could actually give the world the film they had envisioned.
We've read so many reviews where people are just blown away by how epic the film is, many stating it is better than what Hollywood is producing. They couldn't scream louder in their praises for the film.
Most of the people who worked on it gave their time and expertise for free, hundreds of people from all over the world worked together to produce this wonderful piece of cinema.
Every single one deserves thanking, but this dear little newsletter of ours just doesn't have the room.
To Daniel, Christian, Ahern, Anna, Tim, Don, Troy, Lindy, Mickey, John, Tilly, Glenn, Jure, Andrew and everyone else involved in making this epic adventure, thank you from the very bottom of our hearts, you are always welcome at our humble abode. We are honoured to call you friends.
A very special thanks goes to Alena - behind every great man is a woman who is stronger, meaner and more supportive than is humanly possible, you did more than anyone could in keeping Daniel from running like Rincewind.
↑≡2.2.1 Troll Bridge Screenings
Troll Bridge is in the final home run of the festival circuit. With just a couple of festivals left, we can sit here and say that the response has been amazing.
Troll Bridge won its first Award at GenCon - Best Fantasy Film.
Since then it's gone from strength to strength winning awards and being nominated for awards all over the place.

↑≡2.3 The Cosplay Journal Discworld Feature

It seems like such a long time ago that we headed east with Rincewind's Robes tucked around Twoflower's iconograph alongside Magrat's broom and dress.
Jason and myself had been invited to a Discworld Cosplay shoot with The Cosplay Journal and had been asked to round up a few friends to come along and play.
Jason, myself, Kimberley Chandler, Jacqui Lawrence, Elaine Perkins, Tony Perkins, Katy Pi, Nick Acott, Jaz Morrisroe, Julie Morrisroe, Lee Morrisroe and Nicola Manners joined The Cosplay Journals own Holly Rose Swinyard, Megan Amis, Ian Sharman and Alyson Leeds in the sunshine for a day of people looking at us as if we were weird and eating Ice cream like it was going to disappear off the planet's face. Guest photographer was Nick Acott.
The feature will appear in Issue four of The Cosplay Journal which is due out on the 20th October at 11.99GBP

↑≡2.7 International DW Convention News
International Discworld Convention: 7th -10th August 2020
In contrast, the International Discworld Convention has announced their date and location for their 2020 event which will be held at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel from the 7th - 10th August 2020.
People keep asking when memberships go on sale. Keep an eye on their social media feeds for more details, they will give plenty of warning before memberships go on sale.

↑≡2.8 Scheibenwelt Convention 2019
The Scheibenwelt Convention happened last weekend in Germany. Many regular faces were in attendance including Pat Harkin and Ben Aaronovitch. Stephen Briggs made an appearance via the medium of technology ! We heard on the grapevine that there were many highlights including a little Hog who kept gatecrashing the stage during the Costume Competition and piddling on the stage !
They made an announcement about when the next Scheibenwelt Convention will be.
The date of the 2021 event is the 6th - 9th May 2021 at Jugendburg Ludwigstein, 37214 Witzenhausen, Deutschland and the theme is Genua !

↑≡4. Troll Bridge - City of Small Gods

Troll Bridge, the short Discworld film by Snowgum Films, has been having great success screening at various film festivals around the world since its premiere in January 2019.
Saturday, 21st September, was yet another of these premiere screenings, but this time with a difference. The South Australian premiere of Troll Bridge wasn't at a film festival, but was instead hosted by our local fan club, the City of Small Gods. Held at the independent Mercury Cinema, the crowd of 160 fans was enthusiastic about the screening of not only Troll Bridge, but Run Rincewind Run!, another short fan film created by Snowgum Films for the first Australian Discworld Convention, Nullus Anxietas, in 2007.
We also managed to raise approximately 1600AUD from ticket sales which will be donated to the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation. Thanks must go to the wonderful support from Adelaide's community, to Snowgum Films, and the Mercury Cinema.
↑≡5. Review: Hackathon

I took a flying visit to lovely Dublin, Ireland, one Saturday in September, to join the Terry Pratchett Hackathon at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) .
This was the first event of its kind and was hosted by The Pratchett Project, which is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Institute at TCD. This exciting project seeks to digitise Sir Terry Pratchett's novels and their translations. There are three major library catalogues of Pratchett works – TCD, Liverpool University and University of London. The aim is to bring all these libraries together, and will include every version of every Pratchett ever published in every language in one huge archive. This includes all the novels (hard and paperback) , multi-series, illustrated, audio books, and all the additional publications such as maps, short stories, contributions, video games, etc. Through this data researchers can identify how stories differ and study how the writing and translations vary across languages.
I jumped on a very early Ryanair flight from Luton to Dublin, arriving safely and on time to make my way to TDC. All I needed was my laptop, which certainly made getting through security very easy!
This quantitative research on the publication history of Terry's work around the world was an all day event. They had said you didn't need to be a Pratchett fan to come along, and invited anybody with an interest in digital humanities, data science or library studies.
On arrival we were given welcome drinks and the process was explained. We were given three Excel spreadsheets of the databases, then divided up into "teams" to work on one novel each. I was allocated Sourcery. We than had to combine the data from all three spreadsheets into one master document. The difficulty is that because the three institutions use different data methods of recording, you had to match them up very carefully. For example, one place might include the ISBN number, and another would not, which made identifying duplicates more difficult.
We were delighted to welcome Colin Smythe, Terry's former agent. Colin is a TCD alumni and a huge supporter of his former university. His website is an incredible resource of all Terry's works, so was the main area to cross check our data.
We took a break to have a Q&A with Colin, and he talked about his work with Terry and how meanings change when books are translated into other languages. Terry included a huge amount of "Britishness" in his humour, and that does not always come across when translated into another language. The talk was live streamed and was on Facebook, but sadly seems to have now been removed.
There was now a break for lunch, which was provided, and it gave us all a good chance to talk to other guests. One organiser said 70 people had signed up to attend, but sadly only 20 of us were present. I was definitely the guest with the most miles to travel! There was a good mix of people, with some who had never read a TP book being schooled by the fans. The big question was "Which book should I start with?" – guaranteed to start a debate in any group of TP fans. There were also some "techy" people, who were real data-crunching experts and made suggestions for how the database could be laid out.
We returned to the main room to continue data checking. We had barely scratched the surface of the information being compared, and everyone was really keen to finish what they had started. This is clearly a long process but one that is very special to the team.
We were due to have a Q&A with Rob Wilkins, Terry's assistant, but unfortunately he had had to pull out at the last minute. We ended the day looking at some of the translation of Terry's book covers, which was very interesting.
I departed from the beautiful college to head back to the airport, and arrived home nearly 24 hours after I had left. This was a really fun day and great to meet everyone involved.
The following week they had a further seminar called "Pratchett Translated", in which 4 of Terry's translators from Poland, Spain, Hungary and France discussed the challenges of translating Terry's words. This video is available on their Facebook page.

I've just read the latest version of DWM - brilliant as always!
One of my fellow Antipodeans, Glenn Garside, asked if there was any way to purchase the Good Omens DVD/Blu-ray/books etc. from anywhere other than Amazon UK or US, because of the prohibitive cost.
Amazon.co.uk will not sell into Australia because our "beloved" government - both parties - want them to charge and remit GST (our equivalent of VAT) , and buying things from Amazon via Amazon.au is prohibitively expensive with our current exchange rate.
Now that I've looked at Amazon.au (click here for a direct link) , I must say I agree. The cost is currently roughly 60 AUD (including P&P) , which is 40 USD or 33.50GBP. This is double the price on Amazon.co.uk. Alas, I could not compare against Amazon's US price; I clicked on the link you provided (i.e. Amazon US DVD) , but got nothing. Looks like Amazon have taken down their listing for the Good Omens DVD.
As a Fourecksian, I'm used to having to pay through the nose for anything that originates in the US/UK. I'm used to having to pay 20% or 30%, or even 50% more. But double the price? Shame on Amazon for ripping off their Antipodean cousins.
So, yes. Is there any alternative? If not, our only choice is to sit tight and wait until the DVD hits our stores, as usual.
I hasten to add that none of this diatribe is aimed at DWM. You folks always do a fantastic job. I simply wish that Amazon were as fabulous as all of you.
Now 'scuse me while I put on my armour and helmet, grab my axe, climb onto my armoured, emu-drawn chariot, and go racing 'round the outback to search for Mad ...

RE: Bri, Ripon Derbyshire's letter last issue.
I'm not sure about any direct references in PTerry's work to DWJ's work, but back in the early 1980s they were both connected to the science fiction club/group that met in the back room of the White Hart in Bristol, which my brother was also a part of. They knew each other and were friends.
Although PTerry has denied basing his characters on particular individuals, people who knew him at that time have identified traits in certain characters as belonging to people around him. My brother believes that DWJ inspired certain aspects of Nanny Ogg's character (he hasn't said which bits) . On September 7th, I went to the Burbank International Film Festival in the Los Angeles area to watch two short films, Troll Bridge and The 9 Billion Names of God. Both movies based on short stories of my most treasured authors, Terry Pratchett and Arthur C. Clarke. Troll Bridge met all my expectations and got a great reception from the audience (though none came in costume) . Both movies were about as close to the original story as you could get (which I find is very rare) . It was great to finally see the films and look forward to the DVD when it is shipped out in November (I think) .

Back in February 2001, in issue 46 of the DWM, I posted a question to the letters section, wondering if there were any readers who were NOT students. I was then 33 and wondered if I was one of the few "adult" readers then. I received emails from a number of people from all around the world including my own country, Malaysia. But one person's reply from the UK struck a chord, it seemed we had so much in common, university town I'd studied in the UK and where he'd worked etc etc..He was 51 then and I was 33. We've become such good friends over the years, sharing through emails about our families and our daily lives.
Today, 18 years later I've turned 51, my kids have grown up and are in university and he has 2 grandchildren. In 2016, I travelled to London where we finally met each other and families. It's an amazing journey of a truly wonderful friendship, borne out of a simple posting here in the dwm, and I just wanted to give a shout out today and say a BIG THANK YOU to you and your team.
