You may have noticed some changes in the newsletter this month. One of our affiliate partners have changed their rules about how we can display affiliate links. Which means we can no longer include them in the email version of the newsletter. So from this issue onwards we will provide a link to a page on our website that will contain all the affiliate information for that issue. Obviously we are annoyed at having to make this more difficult for you guys but it was either that or just move over to being fully web based and just having the email to let you know a new issue is available on the website. We hope you'll agree that we've made the correct decision but feel free to write to us at info@discworldmonthly.co.uk and let us know your thoughts.

2.2 Neil Gaiman and Friends on BBC Radio

Neil recently had a night of readings, conversation and song at the Barbican, London which was recorded for BBC Radio

Titled Playing in the Dark, Neil Gaiman and the BBC symphony orchestra, it is getting two outings over the Christmas period.

Firstly it is being played on BBC Radio 3 on 23rd December at 7.30pm in its entirety. The event is 2 hours and 28 minutes long.

2.3 The Watch Casting Update.

As we exclusively revealed last month Hakeem Kae-Kazim is playing Captain John Keel so here is a round up of the latest cast.

Anna Chancellor is playing Lord Vetinari.

James Fleet is playing The Archchancellor (they don't say which one)

Ingrid Oliver is playing Doctor Cruces (head of the Assassins Guild)

Ruth Madeley is playing Throat - The cities best snitch

Bianca Simone Mannie is playing Wonse, a wizard.

From the press release:

Anna Chancellor says: "It's been so exciting to join such a wonderfully creative team - from writer Simon Allen to the stunning production design and a truly talented group of actors - to help realise Terry Pratchett's brilliantly anarchic yet strangely real and moving world. With the combining characteristics of Dracula and Elvis - Lord Vetinari has sprung to life in the most alarmingly joyful way"

James Fleet says: "I'm delighted to be playing the Archchancellor. I think the writing and design catch the spirit of Terry Pratchett's work and create a world of jeopardy and humour."

Ingrid Oliver says: "It's a joy to be part of The Watch and take on the role of Doctor Cruces. She's such a fascinating character and pretty badass."

Ruth Madeley says: "I'm so excited to be part of a world that Sir Terry Pratchett created. The character of Throat was male in the original books so for the team to cast me was extra exciting. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Throat develops and what mischief she can bring."

Directors Brian Kelly and Emma Sullivan have now been announced, joining Craig Viverios.

The Watch series is being made by BBC America and will consist of 7a episodes. Its currently being filmed in South Africa.

This update means the cast list currently looks like this.

Sam Adewunmi - Carcer

Jo Eaton-Kent - Cheery

Adam Hugill - Carrot

Lara Rossi - Lady Sybil Ramkin

Hakeem Kae-Kazim - Keel

Anna Chancellor - Lord Vetinari.

James Fleet - The Archchancellor

Ingrid Oliver - Doctor Cruces

Ruth Madeley - Throat

Bianca Simone Mannie - Wonse.

2.4 Troll Bridge - The Final Final Final Chapter

By Jason Anthony-Rowlands

The epic Troll Bridge story continues onwards. The guys at Snowgum Films really expected to be shipping DVDs and Blu-Rays by now but unfortunately things, in the Troll Bridge universe are never quite that simple. It turns out that due to regional differences etc they need to produce several versions of the discs. Which is causing some headaches.

The team are desperately trying to lock down the final edit of the making of documentary which weighs in at around four hours the last I heard.

Rest assured the team are hard at it and the physical media will get sent out in 2020.

If your donation included access to the screening are you should have recently been contacted with information about how to access the streaming area.

The ability to back the production has now been terminated. If you haven't already backed the project it is now too late to do it. Finally after 17 years Troll Bridge is complete.

Head over to trollbridge.film for more information.

3. DiscTrivia

This month, Jason is asking questions from The Ankh-Morpork Archives.

Q1.What is the JCR at the Unseen University?
Q2.Who was the head of Viper House in the Assassins' Guild?
Q3.What is the typical cry of the "Common" or "Jobbing Burglar"?
Q4.What happens to mail sent to 36 Chitterling Street?
Q5.Finish this Vetinari quote "Taxation is the art of getting the ..."?

The answers as usual can be found at the end of this issue.

4. Review: The Ankh-Morpork Archives

Review by: Jason Anthony-Rowlands

As the blurb on the back of the book states: "The Ankh-Morpork Archives (Volume 1) brings together four editions of the infamous Discworld Diaries into one deluxe, digitally re-mastered compendium".

The first volume contains the contents of: Unseen University (1998) , Assassins' Guild (2000) , Thieves' Guild (2002) and Post Office (2007) . The text was originally spread out throughout the books whereas this book brings them all together in one very neat package. While the text and images are the same. They have been reformatted to fit the new larger size book. I noticed that some images have been flipped due to repagination. The intro letters from the heads of guild have also been made to use fonts to make them appear more handwritten.

I found it fun to go through and read this book. Having all the information in one place makes it a whole lot easier and more likely to read. In the past I collected the diaries and took a quick look at them and them and then put them on the shelves and never read them again.

I really hope that the book is a success and will spawn more volumes.

5. Review: Troll Bridge Showing in Bristol.

By David Moger

This came as a bit of a surprise as it was not part of a film festival. This showing was a charity fundraiser for Alzheimer's research and the cost was as much as you wanted to pay.

It was at "The Exchange" in Bristol which is usually a music venue, and there was a long list of events in November which included "Troll Bridge"!

There was an appreciative audience of about 50 people who listened to probably the most uninspired introduction to any film ever. The bloke introducing it said "You probably know more about this than I do so here it is."

I'm sure you don't need me to describe the film. If you haven't seen it and have not backed the film you need to find a friend who has and get them to let you watch it. The landscapes are magnificent, Don Bridges IS Cohen the Barbarian, and the song is just brilliant. The individual trolls are great characters, and whether that is due to Terry's writing or the brilliant CGI, or both, I'll leave up to you to decide.

With such a lacklustre introduction it was not surprising that the start of the song at the end was masked by applause, and by a certain wife shouting "Shut up. Listen to the song", but she did the trick and we heard once again the full version of Martin Pearson's "The What Cohen Did Next Song".

All in all a mixed night, the film was as good as ever with a 4/10 for the venue and intro. However it was well worth it.

6. TERRY PRATCHETT'S VINYL DISCWORLD - Demon records

Written by Stephen Briggs (who wrote the sleeve notes) comments on the end product.

This is, it seems, a time of collectable treasures. Fans have already had the opportunity to invest in one, or more, of a range of luxurious editions of 'Good Omens'… I think there were/are five options? At a time when vinyl is enjoying a big revival, a number of audio dramas have also recently been issued in collector's vinyl editions.

I was pleased to see that the Discworld Series was recently included in the BBC's list of '100 Novels That Shaped Our World'. It seems only right then, that the seven Pratchett books dramatized by BBC Radio should now receive the vinyl treatment. These include "Mort", "Wyrd Sisters", "Guards! Guards!", "Eric", "Small Gods", "Night Watch" and the, non-Discworld, "Only You Can Save Mankind".

Demon Records have produced a boxed set of all seven, transferred onto 15 vinyl LPs.

Many of you will remember the original series, which featured an impressive cast which included such well-known voices as Anton Lesser, Sheila Hancock, Martin Jarvis, Melvyn Hayes, Philip Jackson, Alex Jennings, Lynda Baron and Mark Heap

I should, I suppose, also mention that each drama's sleeve includes notes on the book written by me. I can't comment on the quality of those – but I can say I was very flattered to be asked to write them.

The collection arrives in a classy, substantial box decorated with a view of the Discworld map and A'Tuin. Inside is a cool card with a graphic combining Terry and his world. Then there are separate, illustrated sleeves for each drama. Each individual LP is stored within a further internal 'bag' (as they style them) and these contain portions of the Discworld map so that – should you wish, they could be laid out to form a complete map. That sort of nice attention to detail is what makes this look like a project someone has spent time and effort over.

The complete edition of 15 retails on Amazon for almost 180 GBP, which seemed a lot to me when I first heard. But on a per-disc basis, that's probably the going rate for vinyl?

It's a very cool set for completists and for those really do like their sound on vinyl.

8. Competition: Snuff and Raising Steam - Collectors Library Edition

This month we have copies of Snuff and Raising Steam to give away thanks to the generosity of Penguin Random House. These are the last two "adult" Discworld books to be given Joe McLaren covers. Which means for once as collectors we have almost a full set of books that are the same size and design. We just need to convince the children's team to follow suite for the Amazing Maurice and the Tiffany books.

In order to win these two fabulous hardbacks you need to answer the following question:

Q1.In what year was Snuff first published?

Send your answer along with your postal address to competitions@discworldmonthly.co.uk by Monday 20th January 2020.

Your address will only be used for sending out your prize should you be the lucky winner. Once prizes are sent out all address details will be destroyed. Entries received after the closing date or sent to any other address will be ignored. No more than one entry per person will be accepted - multiple entries will result in a ban from the competition. Failure to answer the questions or provide your postal address will prevent you from being entered into the competition. Answers to the questions must not be posted to any websites before the competition ends. The judges' decision is final. The competition is open to all readers.

The winner will be announced next issue.

* From: "Jessica Yates"

Near the end of this it says her role in the Watch on TV was originally male - if that's a core role, does she mean Cheery Littlebottom - who is female? NO, I just checked DWM and she's not listed on the cast as currently known. Well. read this article anyway. Jessica

Ruth Madeley Interview

Rachel says - A press release came out on the 19th November with news of the additional cast. Ruth Madeley is playing Throat which we believe is a variant of C.M.O.T. Dibbler although they have the character described as "the city's best snitch, with a gang of freelance henchmen at her beck and call."

We did announce this on Facebook and on Twitter on the day the press release came out and in this issue of the newsletter.

UK Book Releases

The Ankh-Morpork Archives Vol 1. Release date : 14th November 2019

The Ankh Morpork Archives got announced last month with a release date of 14th November 2019. R.R.P. is 25GBP and it will be published by Gollancz.

The publisher's blurb ..

"Think you know Ankh-Morpork? Think again.

In this top-secret guide, travellers will receive a first-hand experience of the real city. If you've ever wondered where Unseen University students wet their whistles (while managing to avoid their teachers doing the same) , or just what the Assassins' Guild constitutes a proper means of inhumation - there are standards to be upheld, after all - then this is the book for you.

That's right, have yourselves a peek into the inner workings of city's societies. Cut the chaff, glimpse behind the curtain, see how the sausage gets made . . . err, you get the idea.

Just don't let the Thieves' Guild catch you with this book. They won't appreciate their methods being flogged behind their back. Flogging's their job.

Completely revamped and redesigned, this full-colour book contains material from Discworld Diaries across the decades"

We know it has some additional bits written by Stephen Briggs and better quality images by Paul Kidby.

We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.
