3. The Pratchett Project

Location: Trinity College, Dublin
Date: Fri 23rd Sept 2022
Time: 5pm until 9pm IST

The Pratchett Project in Trinity College Dublin is an interdisciplinary platform for research into the life and works of Terry Pratchett. It builds on the comprehensive collection of Pratchett's works and their translations into forty languages, held in the Trinity College Library, as well as Pratchett's personal connection with the College, borne out of the adjunct professorship he held from 2010. A further part of this endeavour is driven by Pratchett's own life story and inclinations. In 2007, Pratchett publicly announced that he had a rare form of young-onset Alzheimer's disease, called posterior cortical atrophy. He subsequently became a passionate campaigner who was determined to reduce the stigma of dementia. Hence, research into brain health has been an important part of the Pratchett Project in Trinity College. We are currently developing this strand of the project to find new ways in which the implications of breakthroughs in research can be "translated" for members of the public.

The event is split into 4 talks.

5pm: The Cutting Edge - Four scientists will review the latest insights from research, in specific areas in which major advances have and are being made. The emphasis is on the development of novel approaches to understanding and treating Alzheimer's and related diseases.

6pm: Living with Dementia - the programme will focus on how taking an interdisciplinary approach to battling Alzheimer's disease promotes a broader awareness and breaks down stigma associated with dementia.

7pm: Speaking Up for People Living with Dementia - four activists will tell the story of Lewy Body Ireland (LBI), a new movement giving voice to those affected by dementia. Developed and driven by people living with and/or affected by dementia, LBI strives to build a community for carers, clinicians, researchers, dementia-inclusive creative artists, and those living with dementia in order to raise awareness, discover and disseminate knowledge, and provide support to those affected.

8pm: Interview with Rob Wilkins, Terry Pratchett's assistant - James Hadley (Pratchett project coordinator) and Rob Wilkins will meet in conversation, with exchanges with the other contributors, and members of the audience.

4.7.The Final Word

Rachel here: We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though.

We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation.

Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something).

[NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.

Keep being you!

See you soon!

GNU Terry Pratchett...
