Welcome to the first issue of 2019, the Discworld year of the incontrovertible skunk, a year that promises the release of Good Omens on television and finally, after many years, the release of Troll Bridge to all its backers. We hope that this year we will also hear more news about The Watch and other exciting cinematic / televisual delights.
Early in the new year I heard the sad news that one of our Discworld Community, Mike Wines, had sadly passed as some point over the festive season. It was only when people noticed he hadn't posted on Facebook for a few days did the appropriate alarms get raised. Mike was a lovely man who along with his most wonderful wife Cathy produced the amazing Beathtieth in the early 2000s. Sadly Cathy succumbed to cancer a few years ago so Mike died alone.
We've also just heard about the passing of the lovely Sarah Hennigan. Sarah passed while in the company of her husband Bernard (whom she married a few days earlier) and their children. Our condolences go out to Sarah's and Mike's family and friends.
We live in an ageing community - I've been involved in Discworld fandom for over two decades (and I was late to the party) and last year we lost at least a couple more of our Discworld family. Gaz Hunter and Melville Hall are just two that I know of.

2.1 GOOD OMENS is STILL coming !!!

Ok, I'll be honest, I was holding off on producing a January issue because I wanted to be able to write here that it will premiere on Amazon Prime on XYZ date. Which in my head and using all my gut instincts should have been the 5th Feb. I have my reasons for saying that, Publication dates of TV tie in books etc a couple of months ago would have tied up with the release of the series. Some of those books now have a release date of the 5th April…. EDIT 18th April… go figure!
So here we all are sat around, waiting for an announcement that will come approximately two days after we publish just to prove that Crowley does indeed screw with us for giggles.
We do know that the first 3 episodes have been released to a selected few for audience reaction feedback. I know this because despite the fact they signed NDA's, some of those select few couldn't help bragging about it on Reddit.
We also know that Amazon Prime's marketing team are sending out Chocolate Bombs to Instagrammers and Crowley and Aziraphale Tea and Biscuits to Journalists to ramp up interest in the upcoming series. [Except we are not on their lists so we haven't had any. *sad face]
So what has changed since we last said anything about Good Omens?
We have had news about "The Definitive Good Omens" with illustrations by Paul Kidby (release date has changed since we shouted about it on Social Media. It is now the 18th April instead of the 4th) and really nothing much else.
So if you like your Good Omens in paper form, below is a list of all the varying new book editions that we could find plus the TV companion, the scriptbook, plus the re-issue of the Radio 4 Dramatisation.

↑≡2.2 Troll Bridge World Premiere
Troll Bridge had its World Premiere on the 16th January at Flickerfest on Bondi Beach Sydney Australia. Flickerfest is an Academy Accredited and BAFTA-recognised festival and thus their awards are industry recognised. Troll Bridge did exceedingly well to get selected for Flickerfest. 2700 films applied to be included and only 200 got selected of which one was Troll Bridge. That alone is a huge achievement.
Whilst we would give Troll Bridge every award possible, we are slightly biased [read that as majorly biased] but unfortunately the judging panels didn't see what we see in the film.
Daniel Knight said to us (after he had watched the winning films) that the competition was amazing and he was very happy to lose to the shows they lost to.
Daniel did a Live Q&A session on Facebook and Youtube on Monday morning and he reiterated how important it is to allow the film to do the festival circuit. Currently it has only been selected for one festival and that was Flickerfest.
Daniel has been trying hard for the last six months to get Troll Bridge into the festival circuit and the issue may be that it is too long. The plan currently is to edit it down to a length that is pleasing to the festival circuit and that length is 10-14 minutes long. As it stands the current festival edit is 25 mins long with the full film being 33 mins long. That is a major barrier as a festival selection committees have to decide to have either 2 films in the time slot or Troll Bridge. Most will go for the 2 films so a second film festival edited version is needed to allow Troll Bridge to have the best chance to get selected,
Troll Bridge wouldn't lose the main story arc though, just a character arc would be dropped for the sake of the edit. On the DVD/Blu Ray there will still get the full film so backers need not worry about this affecting the film they will receive.
Which leads us on to a couple of the main questions:
- When are backers getting their rewards?
The answer is at the latest the 1st November 2019. This is to allow the film every chance possible on the festival circuit because once it has been released to the backers, film festivals will not be interested in Troll Bridge at all as it would have gone to distribution.
- I'm a Backer but I haven't heard anything from Snowgum Films in a long time?

Troll Bridge's contract states that they can continue raising money while they are still in a position to spend money [on the film!] . Once the film has been completed and outstanding expenses covered, SnowGum Films may need to close off DVD availability.
So if you want it on DVD or Blu-ray, order it now as you may not be able to get it later!

Other than the updated information up in the Good Omens is Still Coming section, news on the 2020 diary has shown up on our radar.
The 2020 Diary will be called Death and Friends, A Discworld Journal and is penned by the wonderful nutters at The Discworld Emporium . Current release date is the 8th August 2019 and it should be good from the burb.

↑≡3. Review: Going Postal – East End Players

This is East End Player's third Discworld play and we attended the first night.
The stage was quite a small one, requiring an innovative set which the team certainly delivered; the post office represented by loads of boxes with letters at rear of stage with the curtain being used when other locations such as Vetinari's officer were needed. We were particularly impressed by the boxes being slid apart to reveal the Omniscope for the climactic scene – kudos to the set team. Music was also amusingly chosen, and used to cover the longish blackouts. As it was a first night, some things did go wrong, but that's theatre and the cast and crew worked hard to either cover up or make a joke of it.
The cast were well chosen and believable in their roles; a Lady Vetinari was a bit of a surprise but Margaret Butt played it well, looking slightly reminiscent of Theresa May but giving it the full Thatcher handbag when required. Stanley was, well, Stanley and came across wonderfully as the sort of obsessive who is always looking over your left ear…
Ian Gilbert as Moist had the difficult job of playing the very long role and having to improvise round some quite frequent lacunae in lines – including his own. One on-stage remark suggested that they had made last-minute cuts and explained some of the confusion, but almost all the cast had to be prompted at some time. Ian improvised madly and broke the fourth wall well to keep things moving, but it still was a bit uncomfortable. However, let him or her who has never blanked on stage throw the first stone…
Overall, a fun night and great to see so many non-Pratchett fans in the audience – more converts!
↑≡4. Review: Johnny and the Dead – Paulton Amateur Dramatic Society Youth Players

A football club on a match day was certainly an unusual venue for a Pratchett play, but a portable stage in a function room worked well for the production.
The set was great, with nice glow-in-the-dark headstones and moon, lots of ivy and a smoke machine for atmosphere; simple but effective.
It's a small company and because of that some difficult casting decisions had been made – kudos to the director, Gemma Turner, for picking people who whilst they didn't quite fit Terry's descriptions could carry off the roles well. For a youth cast we were also impressed by how smoothly the play went and how much effort they had all put in to make it work – Gemma told us that the cast had had a great time doing the play, which is also good to hear. A couple of older characters were also cast – Bernard Welch as Grandad particularly stood out with a lovely portrayal.
Tom Grey as Johnny was perfect – he conveyed the character so well, showing an understanding of what he was doing beyond his years. The Dead were also wonderfully done – we were particularly impressed by the characters with strong foreign accents (Jasmine Chivers as Antonio Vicenti, Harry Melling as Solomon Einstein) who carried them off flawlessly, a feat many adult actors can't manage. Gracie Niermond as the Alderman managed to portray the pomposity perfectly, and Libby James as William Stickers gave us a great wannabe-Marxist.
A lovely performance and one that more people should have seen; next time this company are doing a Pratchett we will be first in the queue at the newsagent's for tickets!
↑≡5. Review: Guards! Guards! By Luke Players, Birmingham

Founded in 1937, the Luke players are over 80 years old, one of the oldest companies we've seen doing Terry plays.
The venue was Birmingham Metropolitan Art Centre (the MAC) , a rather grand building but the stage was quite modest – small might be kinder!
We knew we were in for a fun experience when the first scene commenced with the Dig, Dig, Dig song of the Disney dwarfs – the humour in music selection was a lovely feature of this production, with several similarly witty choices.
The production was well put together and performed, with only a couple of slips on lines. The director had taken the decision to leave in the footnote character, which companies sometimes remove – Lucy Smart did a lovely bubbly job of delivering the footnotes (and prompting too) . It does help non-Pratchett fans to get some of the humour, but at the expense of slowing the action.
Carrot was played by Ellie McFall, who made a lovely job of playing the innocent abroad that makes the role so special; Paul Deane as the Librarian dressed in a very fetching dressing gown was convincing especially in his irritation at the lack of intelligence of the human cast, and managed to convey a wide range of emotions via "ook!".
Mark Earl as Vimes and Michelle Smart as Wonse played well together, with Mark doing Vimes's world-wearyness to Wonse's smarmy officiousness very convincingly.
Errol was a rather lovely glove puppet with superb eyes – nice work by the props crew, who otherwise were a bit limited by the size of the stage.
Overall, an enjoyable production, and we hope the Luke players will try another Pratchett soon.

Review of Guards! Guards! By Luke Players, MAC Birmingham 1 December 2018 – Last night
performance
Being a local performance of the 1st City Watch book (my introduction to the written Pratchett, after seeing Eric as an Am-Dram in York umpty-umph years ago) , I was looking forward to seeing how the Luke Players would bring the Ankh-Morpork City Watch to life, using Stephen Briggs amazing adaptation.
After meeting some fellow fans outside the main door – one couple even coming from Bradford, if my memory serves correctly, and even asked after our beloved editors Jason and Rachel – there seemed to be a good representation of ages, and knowledge of Sir Terry's work.
The theatre space was small, but well utilised throughout the play, making good use of the stairs at the right of the stage (as I looked at it) for various scenes in the roof tops of Ankh-Morpork.
There was minimal use of props during the play – a table and chair for Carrot's letter writing scenes, and for Vetinari's office, and an amazing Errol arm puppet.
The actors were great throughout – though during the first scene at the Secret Society doors, the 1st keeper of the door was hard to be heard, there was a missed line during the scene between Vimes and Wonse (Wonse asking whether Vimes had been drinking) , and DEATH came out without his mask on during the deaths of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night.
Mark Earey who played Vimes, Andrew Delahunty who played the Patrician, and Helen Smart who played Nobby were all fantastic in their parts – they were close to how I imagined them to be. Eliie McFall was great in her role as the Naive Carrot.
The only thing that seemed out of place was the use of Disney's "Heigh Ho" at the start of the play, though I can understand the reason behind it, as it is linked to the dwarves from Snow White
All in all, a great show, and would like to see them attempt another adaptation.
↑≡6. Report: Stephen Briggs at Beaconsfield Library – 10th October 2018

I must first apologise for the delay in writing this. Sometimes life gets in the way!
I was delighted to get a ticket to attend this talk with the illustrious Mr Briggs back in October. The event was arranged by the Beaconsfield Society during Libraries Week. The aim was to celebrate the life and works of our favourite author, who as we know was born and raised in Beaconsfield.
It was an interesting start as Stephen asked if all those attending knew about Discworld, and a couple of people were new to DW and to Terry, so Stephen first had to explain what Discworld and L-Space was. Let's hope there are some new converts to the great man! Stephen then talked about how we hooked up with Terry, doing a theatrical adaptation of Wyrd Sisters. He continued the friendship when adapting Mort.
Terry then asked him to collaborate on the Discworld Companion. However, it was decided a map of Ankh Morpork should be created first. The map was largely consistent with what was in Terry's head versus the books, though there are a few exceptions where some 'stretching' had to take place. The creation consisted largely of a lot of Tippex and blue tack, and also a lot of faxing back and forward (emails being non-existent back then) .
Terry apparently included some "easter eggs" for future stories, such as the River Gleam which appeared in The Truth several years later. The River Ankh was flipped 90 degrees to run top to bottom rather than across. During the final printing of the map, the printers made the final product smaller than the two men imagined, and it was Stephen who made them make it larger.
After some lovely stories, a Q&A session took place in the grand tradition of such events. Stephen touched on how Terry was funny, tough and not someone to suffer fools. He ended with saying how privileged he was to work with Terry.
It was an interesting and enjoyable evening, with thanks to Stephen, and to Beaconsfield Library for hosting.
↑≡7. Review: Hogfather at Unicorn Theatre

A few Discworld fans had an unexpected gathering on a Saturday afternoon in November when we travelled to Abingdon for this production of Hogfather by Studio Theatre Club.
The play opened with some Hogswatch carollers and I was very impressed with the vocals and harmonies of the choir. We had a Narrator to keep the story moving, performed nice and clearly by Michelle Chew. Sarah Wright was very well cast as Susan Sto Helit, having a consistently stern manner (and also a wonderful costume!) . Mr Teatime was suitably evil and did a very good job, though I had to question the choice on his shoes. His lovely smart costume was heavily marred by wearing very casual shoes with white soles, which to me was a glaring error.
The role of Death was operated by our own Stephen Briggs, and voiced by Mike MacDonald. They did an excellent job together and had clearly worked hard to synchronise the moves and voice. The rest of the cast all did brilliantly and there was not a weak cast member at all. There was one massive surprise at the end when they included an audio clip from the Hogfather movie, in which Death visits the Toymaker and Terry's voice is heard. That was definitely a tear-jerking moment.
Hogfather has several stories threading through it and switches scenes a lot. There was excellent use of a large screen displaying the location as we jumped from one to the next, and sometimes back again. This was well used in conjunction with lighting effects, and kept the set minimal with no requirements for getting huge backdrops on and off.
The play has adapted well from the book and keeps the main theme of belief very much at the front of the play, along with the Tooth Fairy story. Obviously some things have to change or be dropped given the restrictions of the stage, but the play does not suffer for that and Mr Briggs is to be congratulated for his skills.
I thoroughly enjoyed the play and look forward to seeing more from STC in the future.

I have to disagree with one reader's umbrage at Cheery's being described as nonbinary. Cheery is certainly NOT nonbinary as we know she identifies as female. However, she DOES have nonbinary-ness forced on her by Dwarf society and eventually breaks free of it. So I think it's a good way to describe her at the beginning so those who don't know the story can watch her break free from what's been forced on her all her life, just as nonbinary people have to do in a binary world. In that way, it certainly works as a way of planting the idea into the heads of newcomers to the stories.
